Basically I have this project finished but the client wants some kind of effect to show the artist dreaming. I have no idea how to do this and it's driving me crazy.

I think you need to clarify a little. The visual representation of dreams has been handled in many different ways. Is there a specific look you're trying to emulate?

You can go to the good old "Saved By The Bell" dream effect, which is just a feathered hot pink matte over your footage. But something tells me you probably want something less cheesy.

Cieloent, try some diffusion and/or a duplicate layer blurred and change the composite mode to taste. Also might want to lower the frame rate with 'strobe'. Finally, desaturate to taste. There are many ways to do it, just get creative.

Thanks for the help !

Basically it is a Music Video I am working on and the artist sits down in a chair and starts to dose off, as he does this the music starts playing and the scenes from the video are flickering back and forth as he is going in and out of this dream.

This sequence only last less then 10 seconds but the way it is cut now, the manager feels that I did not represent it clearly. So he wants some kind of actual "cheesy effect" I guess to actually show that he is dreaming instead of out of focus shots going in and out of the dream how I have it......

Frustrated on this one as IMO it was perfect how I had it, but he's the one cutting the check and will only do it once I fix this..........

It really depends on personal taste but a few techniques are: desaturating; a white vignette; raising the brightness; a glow filter; duplicating the layer, dropping the opacity on the top layer and blurring it; slowing down the frame rate with something like strobe; using a posterisation effect and slight blur to give a pastel look; giving it a tint to match the mood of the dream; duplicating the layer then dropping the opacity on the top layer and offsetting it a few frames to give a trailing effect; light rays & lens flares; plenty more I can't think of right now.

Pick your favorite techniques from the list and combine them to create your own signature dream look!

All I did was slow the footage down, defocus the shots in steps and then vignette smaller and smaller. Might have not been the best, but it worked and client was happy.

Thanks for the tips people!
