I've just been curious why MainConcept products seem to be far more money than anything like episode pro or squeeze? Is there really that big of a quality difference that they can charge $1,900 for a codec?

Anything is worth what the buyer is willing to pay for it.

Sorenson Squeeze has a lot of different codecs and features that help small production houses, but the codecs they use are cheaper ones without all the features that may come with professional codecs.

I'd say that Mainconcept's h.264 encoder is up there with the top 3 encoders. Not to mention the batch abilities of Mainconcept's encoder can save your company LOTS OF TIME. And those time saving features are where the most money gets spent.

It also comes with an Software Development Kit so you can integrate it into your custom pipelines for high quality encoding processes. Its like buying the source code for a product so you can implement it into your own applications. (You get source code to hook into their DLLs that do the encoding).

Mainconcept's encoders are usually expensive, but you are right, there are some encoders that achieve similar results for cheaper and have a better value, but when it comes to having the highest quality, and the most time-saving features, those people will charge a premium for it.

it's not so much the codec, as the software that controls the encoding process... the h.264 pro mainconcept encoder has incredible versatility, with a bunch of options... with software like squeeze, you get batch encoding, frame resizing, etc., which is not typically found in simple encoding software.

if all you need is h.264 encoding, the nero package has incredible quality for the money... frys.com currently has it for free after rebates, but the deal ends today.
