Main benefit of Dedo lights?

Why is a Dedo light better than an Arri fresnel? I know you can put the Dedo projector on an Arri. Is the Dedo better because it puts out more light for the size?

I read on the Dedo site that it does not get as hot as other lights.

Any advice?

Re: Main benefit of Dedo lights?

For me, hot is hot.  Sure it takes a 20k longer to cool down then it does a junior, but they're both uncomfortable to touch when operating for a while. Sure dedos run a little cooler then fresnels, but they're still not quite "touchable" cool like fluroscents, so the lower heat doesn't factor in my opinion of them.

Dedos are very efficient, as they use a sliding collection mirror, lamp and meniscus lens assembly that focuses through a condenser lens at the front of the light.  Because of this design, they have a highly focusable beam (25:1 focus range) that remains very efficient and even through out the range of focus. The light that they put out is very specialized and very intense relative to their power consumption.

However, they aren't a good replacement for a standard complement of fresnel lenses.  Fresnels can light a much larger area then can be lit with dedos in most cases, so dedos really come into play as accent lights rather then broad catch-all lighting instruments.

Re: Main benefit of Dedo lights?

Dedos have saved me many times when shooting interviews in confined spaces.
The beauty of a say 4-light Dedo set is, that it fits into one medium sized case
(ok, its a bit heavy) add your camera bag and tripod and you are ready to go.
A set of 3-4 fresnels incl. stands, barndoors and some accessories would be at
least 3-5 times the volume of a Dedo set.
