Magic Flute

The Magic Flute, by Mozart , filmed by Ingmar Bergman. At the beginning , we see a series of faces ( men ,women, children ), closeup , the faces of the spectators, watching intently the stage. Background is black, the faces in the DVD version are orange.
I need the same sequence, but with the faces less soft and more white. I took my photographer and my dvx100a, we had shutter at 60, sixth setting ( 24pa) manual iris, two toto one yard away from the faces , no blue filtering, no filter.
the faces are hard , sharp , which is what I wanted ( it is supposed to be in a POW camp), but the faces are very orange. what can I do either in editing or in the next shoot to get rid of the orange color.

Re: Magic Flute

First, check your white ballance. Hold up a white card and balance from that. After you have the proper white balance, go into your scene settings and mess around with the chroma level, color temp and color phase to get the faces looking the way that you want. If none of that works, fix it in post.

Re: Magic Flute

Watch out for hard lighting the faces in video. Make sure the makeup holds up and that nothing is noverexposed. I also believe, if I'm not mistaken that in that film the faces are slighttly underexposed (1/2 stop, maybe?)...

Re: Magic Flute

Well, that would depend on which film you were referring to  ::)

Really, just go for what looks good to you - it doesn't matter if the faces are blown out or underexposed, if you want them to be, and know what it means when they are.

Otherwise you could say that Kurtz's slaughter in Apocalypse Now was poorly shot because the subjects are underexposed  ;D
