Magic Bullet & others software & DVX

Hi Guys,

I'm new to the DVX scene (and film making - so treat me gently) and have just placed an order for a dvx100ae (should be arriving next tuesday)

Now I'm slightly confused, I assume that the dvx shooting at 24p will give a nice filmic look to any work that I will be doing which means that I can edit everything straight with Ppro1.5.

I've just read some threads about Magic bullet and other software and see that they can do the filmic look.... now is it worth buying that or can I just rely on the material straight out of the dvx?

In other word is it worth buying magic bullet?

cheers

Hey Amz, welcome to dvxuser!

Since you are just getting started, I would suggest getting used to what the DVX can do before you start applying a bunch of filters to your footage. Work on getting properly exposed and framed shots and learn good camera handling. That will keep you busy enough for some time. Then when you feel that you are getting a handle on the camera and the NLE then try something like Magic Bullet.

Thanks khmuse,

I just wanted to know how magic bullet would help and if it is worth it, as it seems like the dvx can do just about anything ......

Btw I come from a photography background so hopefully should have some experience which i can transfer to film, specially the composing and lighting ;)

The DVX is certainly a capable camera and with a bit of effort can make some very fine images. By the way, a background in shooting still images is an excellent starting place for shooting either motion film or video. I started out shooting large format B/W many years ago and much of it has been very applicable. If your a B/W guy like me, then just set your DVXs EVF to B/W and it will give you a great way of judging lighting setups.

Have fun and think about getting Barry's book and DVD. It is a perfect place to start.

Thanks for the lighting advice.

Seems like I cant wait to play with the DVX and see what it can do. I'm already in the process of storyboarding a documentary project and photographing locations, shots and angles. I think thats one of the advantage of coming from a still photgraphy background that your always composing and thinking about the 'perfect' shot/angle.

maybe you dont know this, but if you are getting it from an authorized US dealer you get Magic Bullet for Editors v.1 for free... but if you arent buying from US i bet you could buy a copy here from someone for way below the 300 street price. and most of the looks can be faked in your NLE..

Thanks for that news. Unfortunately Im in the UK, London to be specific, and have ordered the dvx through a UK distrubutor. But if I need to get magic bullet then I may ask around here. Till then I'll wait till I've played around with the dvx and figured its 24p mode, colours, curves etc.

I think waiting until you get your DVX and seeing what you can do in post is a great idea. You'll be surprised with how little post work it takes to make DVX footage look great.
