Magic Bullet or Digital Film Tools?

They is about a $100 difference in price between the two. MB is going for $795 and DFT Super Bundle at $695. From the examples on the DFT site, I am moving towards buying those plugins. Has anyone used either of the two? I'd like to hear you thoughts. What does MB have that DFT doesn't? How easy or hard are they to use in conjunction with FCP?

Re: Magic Bullet or Digital Film Tools?

All I hear is that it is really slow to render, doesn't matter if you have a triple processor G7. I downloaded the demo and damn it is slow. I have checked out Nattress' Film Effects though http://www.nattress.com/filmEffects.htm and for $100 those are some pretty nice film effects. I don't know how it compares to the "Magic Bullet" but I'll probably be getting the Nattress filters today.

Re: Magic Bullet or Digital Film Tools?

Since you can shoot 24p native, I would look at Magic Bullet for editors. It doesn't handle 24p conversion but does everything else and it's like $300.

Re: Magic Bullet or Digital Film Tools?

That Magic Bullet for Editors looks quite interesting...So you saying that if I shoot something in 24PAdvanced that I would not be able to use it?

Re: Magic Bullet or Digital Film Tools?

You can definitely use Magic Bullet for Editors with 24PA stuff.  What MattC is referring to is the $1000 version of Magic Bullet includes a 24P conversion module for footage shot in 60i.  But we DVX users don't need that, since the camera does 24P natively, so they offer a much less expensive version of the program that doesn't include the 60i->24P conversion module.

Re: Magic Bullet or Digital Film Tools?

thanks Barry for clearing that up.

After reading some of the posts, the consensus believes that MB is slow when it comes to rendering. Is this the case if your using a MAC G5? Seems like folks like the Nattress film look plug ins the most.

Re: Magic Bullet or Digital Film Tools?

Magic Bullet gets really quick if you use David Jimerson's substitute settings for Vegas instead! ;)

Seriously, I don't have a Mac so I couldn't answer that. Graeme Nattress is a very talented programmer and people really seem to like his work, and he's mac-only, someday it may make sense to get a mac just to run his software!

Re: Magic Bullet or Digital Film Tools?

Anyone know? I am trying to find out more info about why folks say it takes a long time to render. I have a Mac G5 and if it is going to be slow on my platform, I don't know if I want to get it.

Re: Magic Bullet or Digital Film Tools?

Magic Bullett for Editors is slow. A 3 minute short can take something like 1-2 hours to render in my Dual 1.4 G4. Maybe I'm exagerating, but is far from instant results. What I really like about MB is it's diffusion plugin. White and Black diffusion with very interesting results, that can not only give you a flashier look but also cover a lot of DV artifacts and grain. The rest of it, with it's preconceived looks is cool, but not something you cannot do with a couple of color correcting in FCP (and no render).

Re: Magic Bullet or Digital Film Tools?

what is the reason behind the slowness? Is it just the nature of the software? I want to get some plugins that are going to be compatible (speed wise) with my G5. I may check out that Nattress plug in.

Re: Magic Bullet or Digital Film Tools?

I can attest to the slowness of MB. I had to color my PAL feature using it and each 20 minute segment took about 37 hours! I loved the results but it certainly does take time.

Re: Magic Bullet or Digital Film Tools?

Yes, save yourself the time and do it through the FCP 3-way color corrector. You'll end up with much more control over the image, and rendering will be quick.

Plus, you'll have the option of saying how original you were by not using a pre-set filmlook. :D

Re: Magic Bullet or Digital Film Tools?

Natress is good, or at least the demo impressed the hell out of me considering it is 99 bucks.

I'm personally going to start with that, and save my money for twixtor so I can do good slow-mo in 24pa. If anyone has a cheaper resolution to that problem please speak up, because FCP just causes flicker. Grrr.
