Magic Bullet Looks- Failed To render- Hardware

I've googled this and found some people have the same problem, but I haven't found a solution. Here's the situation

I am running FCP 6 and Magic Bullet Looks, working with HD footage from the HMC150.

I have used MB Looks with SD footage from my DVX and HD footage from my HVX and it always worked perfect. I even used it one some HMC footage a few days ago (i messed up the transcode settings and it was MPEG). Just today I dropped some HMC150 footage into FCP (the footage is apple pro res, 1280x720), added Looks and then tried to render and I get the message:

"The effect 'Looks' failed to render. Your hardware cannot render at the requested size and depth."

So it appears that Looks is working on DVCPROHD and what not, but whenever I try using it on Apple Pro Res clips, it gives me that message. Is there a way around this, so I can continue using Apple Pro Res and looks, or is there a more suitable codec to use for my HMC150 footage (I am using Toast 9 to transcode)? Thanks.

I've also used the same clips in After Effects and applied looks; it rendered fine, so I don't really think it's a hardware problem.

Hey, I am having this exact same issue. I have used Magic Bullet many times before, but now I've got some footage shot on the RED which I used RedRushes to convert to Apple Pro Res and 2k...

In fact, when I first started editing the project, I tested magic bullet Looks on a few clips and it DID render... but now that I have a whole project (3:30 min music video) I can't.

I have googled quite a bit and the funny thing is, every thread where someone asks this question remains unanswered!

"The effect 'Looks' failed to render. Your hardware cannot render at the requested size and depth."

What gives?

Oh yeah, although I think it's irrelevant due to working before, I have one of the new macbook pro's, FCP 7 and 4 gigs of ram.

ah, found the fix already. although it sucks. I stumbled upon this thread:

http://www.lafcpug.org/phorum/read.php?4,192062,237653

They realized they were all having the same problem when using a second monitor. I just unhooked my monitor, restarted my computer and restarted FCP, and viola! Works like a charm.

Just wanted to share this fix in case anyone else here has the same issue. :)

Thanks, I had the same problem with a Mac Book Pro/8600GT Switched to 8 bit and unplugged 2nd monitor and it worked.

Cheers!

The issue is your GRAPHICS CARD. If you are using the stock one, or not one of the grand daddy POOBAH good ones, like the ATI 3870 or 4870 or x1900, then it is underpowered to work with MB Looks AND two monitors. The cards I mentioned don't have this issue.

The effect 'Looks' failed to render

The effect 'Looks' failed to render

"The effect 'Looks' failed to render. Your hardware cannot render at the requested size and depth."

I unplugged my second monitor and rebooted. It rendered just fine.

Yeah...I found that "fix" when I had the same issue as well. Wouldn't accept it so I kept digging. The other fix is to change your sequence settings within FCP so it renders in 8 bit instead of 10 bit (as albert suggests). Worked for me...and I didn't have to unplug my 2nd monitor everytime I wanted to use MBL (unlike albert).

I've been having the same problem, 8-bit isn't even working for me I have to render in RBG and then it works. Not sure what the quality difference is.

Actually i found a pretty simple work around. Basically, open a new sequence and drag a video clip shot on a Sony EX1 and when it asks if you would like it to conform the sequence to that clip hit yes. Then go in and change the setting of the clip from XDCAM to ProRes and Bam. Your good to go. You can render MBL on ProRes files.

What difference is there between rendering in 8 bit instead of 10 bit?

The difference is HUGE.
Try to render a gradient at 8 bit per channel or at 10 bit per channel. The 8 bit will have banding everywhere and the 10 bit will be perfect for TV.
For print or film you can to go 16 bit per channel or 32, for a more even quality.

In numbers, 8 bit = 256 levels of color for each of the RGB channels

10 bit is 512 steps
16 is 64635 and so on...

I beg to differ. I can show you footage rendered in 8 bit and then rendered in 10 bit and you will not be able to tell the difference. At least for internet purposes I stand by this comment 100%

2nd monitor was the problem with mine. Unplugged it and it worked - i even had it working a little when the monitor was connected. Not sure what was done at that point.

Hopefully they'll make a fix for it so both can used at the same time.

I'm trying to use MB Looks with FCP on a Macbook Pro with 8gb of ram and 3.16 ghz.

It just crashes every time I click on MB Looks.

I have no idea what to do.

Work around works!!

Work around works!!

Just got the message too on my ProRess422 (regular not LT or HQ) footage. I closed the laptop - Zzzz - and then woke up the computer with just the external monitor running and now I can render. Footage was shot on 7D in 1080. I think that laptops have a hard time with this 1080p stuff even when transcoded to ProRess, even a 2.6 Dual Core with 6 gigs of ram. i7s are better I'm sure but a tower seems to be needed once you start getting creative with footage: layers, titles etc. I am using an old GeForce 8600M GT with just 256Mb so that's probably adding to the problem. Tower is not gonna happen though, even if I beg Santa! (FYI - I am using an ancient version of MB looks too from 2008)

:(

As far as I've seen the bug is related to the FXplug plugin architecture. If your videocard doesn't have a lot of video-ram then simply having 2 monitors hooked up will trigger the issue. Switching from 10 to 8 bit will save a bit of memory … hence it sometimes solves the issue. Also -- if you have 2 videocards installed many plugins won't render at all. Known issue… likely not fixed until FCP 8 next year…since the bug has existed for several years now.
