Magic Bullet crashing?

I just loaded on Magic Bullet and I loved the effects. Although everytime I hit ok and get back to the premiere pro screen, the program in its entirety freezes.

I can't recover it either. just wondering if this happened to anyone else

its premiere pro 3 running on a p4, 2gigs ram, nvvidia 57xx card.

my specs should be decent enough. weird
any suggestions?

One of my Suites (with P4) runs it ok but that is running CS2.

I dont think I would be running CS3 on a P4 though.

My CS3 Suite handles MB Looks easily.

oh thanks for the reply. hmm... i might load vegas and see what results i get.

it's weird I did this brute force method of just constantly trying. FInally it didn't crash anymore, but it would render the file wrong. Only a black screen would appear, or it would flicker.
I think it may have more to do with my graphics card.
it's a shame because magic bullet is so easy to use and wonderful.

I experienced exactly the same thing on mine. My old MB Editor works just fine, never experienced this problem. Probably a bug within Looks.

oh ok thanks. so what do you mean by old MB editor? don't you have to use it through vegas/premierer/fcp?

Magic Bullet Editor is the previous plug-in for Premiere. Has most of the same preset as Looks, although Looks has a lot more tools but to me Editor is quite a bit more stable. The problems I've experienced are the same as you: either the footage would go completely black or it would flicker constantly. I have not able to determine whether the fault is with Looks or with my computer as it's not all that stable. I'll be getting a new comp soon and I'll see if MB Looks works more reliably on that.

I had to troubleshoot a problem with Looks, and it turned out to be the video card. At the very least you could try updating your video drivers. I purchased a new card and that fixed my problem.

what card do you recommend? anything under 150 dollar range?
i have a pci express card, i prefer nvidia since it works better with linux (my main OS)

would you say more than 256Mb?

oh no. i just use linux mainly. and I have another hard drive specifically only for video editing using XP. soon when lumiera comes out, video editing on linux should be realistic and considering how it handles memory allocation, it should be better OS to do video editing on then windows or mac.

thanks so I'll look into the 512Mb range.

Like Apple Motion, Magic Bullet Looks requires specific graphics card capabilities to run. Without the correct card, the software will not install or run, and the installer will warn you if you don't have the necessary graphics card installed in your system.

Magic Bullet Looks supports a wide range of cards from both ATI or NVIDIA. For ATI cards, we require a 9600 XT or greater, or an X series card starting with the X700 series. Cards with greater model numbers and at least 128 MB of RAM can run the Looks engine.

For NVIDIA cards, we support the 6600 model and higher or QuadroFX 1300 and up. Cards with higher model numbers and a minimum of 128 MB of RAM can run Looks. For users working with HD images, we require that the video card have at least 256 MB of RAM. In all cases, we suggest using the latest video drivers for your graphics card.

Please Note Since all media is processed at 32 bit, you will absolutely need a 256 MB graphics card or larger. For newer cards from ATI and NVIDIA, we recommend a minimum of 320 MB of RAM. For 2K projects, we recommend 512 MB or a larger amount of RAM on the graphics card.

In most cases, the Looks plug-in requires rendering to generate final color-corrected output. With host applications like Final Cut Pro and Premiere Pro, you can use Looks as a real-time color correction effect with the dynamic playback capabilities. With applications such as Apple Motion and Adobe After Effects, rendering is required to generate any output with Looks applied. In general, the faster the graphics card, the faster the rendering of media. NVIDIA cards are generally faster than ATI cards of the same level for HD or HDV projects.

Please Note The maximum render size in Looks is 8192 x 8192, but is dependent on the video card in the system. Most cards will support 2K media (2048 x 1536) rendering, but only the NVIDIA 8800 series cards or Quadro 4600/5600 support 8K output at time of this writing.

Performance Expectations

Since the processing requirements vary wildly by the number of tools in a look, it is difficult to give exact output or render speed expectations on every system with every look. On the highest-end systems such as a Mac Pro or PC workstation with the Quadro 4000 series of graphic cards, you can expect relatively speedy rendering.

On a Mac Pro with an X1900XT card, we tested some of the looks for render speed on a 720p clip saved in DVCPRO HD format. This is a higher data rate than DV but lower than uncompressed. The following table shows the render speed of various Look presets. The render speed is noted for the output time relative to the length of the media. For example, a look that is 2.4x real time means that 1 minute of media will take approximately 2 minutes and 25 seconds to render.

Neo, Epic
Extremely Simple
1.1x Project Time

Subtle Film
Simple
1.5x Project Time

Basic
Moderate
2.4x Project Time

Dream Look
Complex
3x Project Time

Focus Left Cool
Extremely Complex
4.6x Project Time

As a rule of thumb, you can triple these render times for full-resolution 2K media in QuickTime format. A 1.5x process like the one for the Subtle Film preset becomes a 4.5x process, so a 1 minute piece of 2K media would take about 4 minutes and 30 seconds to output. For DPX or Cineon media, the render times can be more than 10x real time because of the overhead of writing this format. You have been warned. :-)

@ Postmaster

Thanx for the very informative post.

and ....I can not let this opportunity pass by.

Can you guys make the TABS in 'Looks' a little larger please. They are so easy to "drop off".

Awesome product by the way (and look forward to one day being able to keyframe it and have some "shapes" in it.)

errr... I´m not working for the Orphanage - thou it was tempting to let you belive that for a while . I just copy-pasted some information of the MB website.

By the way, MB Looks 1.1 is already keyframeable (thou not very comfortable) and has shapes (called power mask - right under the looks tab).

Frank

Oh the old un referenced source thing... naughty and confusing.

The Power Masks are a bit limiting for true keyframe effects work because you still have to enter the Looks Interface which of course you can not "Play" down.

ok so I'm going to get the eVGA Nvidia 8800GT. should conquer all the rendering needs I have

I had this SAME problem and it went away when i updated the video card drivers. I also found that other apps using the video card worked much better after the update.

Got the same problems with my Nvida Card, thou it has a GIG of memory.

Swapped in the new ATI Radeon 4870 BM runns like a charm.
Plus you can use the Terraflops Chip on the card to speed up encoding several 100%.
