Maffer versus Cardellini

What's the difference? When does one use a maffer over a cardellini and vice versa?

They are both similar, both are good for tight places or complexed rigging. The maffer works "clamp" style, while the cardellini works "vice" style. The vice fuction on the cardellini allows it to open wider. The t-handle is bigger on the cardellini and is built into the vice system. This makes it stronger, both in constuction and hold, than the maffer.
The maffers use a t-handle tigthtening method like a c-stand. It all really comes down to the rig. I use cardellinis when securing the loose end of a 6x6 to a combo stand. It is sleeker and is more mangable when attatching to the lolly pop. I use maffers for saftey at the end of a dolly track or when I need a quick grap-and-hold set-up on the edge of the set or something like that. There are some rigs that Keys will call for one or the other, but it mostly comes down to your judgement and experience. Try them both and build a mental file of which works the best for the given situation.
We are playing with tinker-toys. All of the pieces fit together, it's up to you to make it the safest and most effective.

In general, I think Cardellinis would probably replace Mafers if the prices were the same. Instead, Cardelinnis cost about twice as much.

The grip feels a little more solid and there's a little more "space" around the pin to work with. The double pin Cardellinis are great for placing a light and flag (with a grip head) quickly off a surface. Wider mouths are helpful with some rigging.

I have a few Mafers in the kit, but choose a Cardelinni over them just about every time. I'm going to buy a couple more.

I think the maffer still has it's place. I think the greatest feature is the fact of the removable pin. Allowing you to mount a maffer easily off any 750/baby pin can come in handy.

that said though i do like the cardellini/matthelini a lot. i really wanna get the 6" version. the 2" and 3" don't often open wide enough and i don't really like using furniture clamps if i can help it...

what do u guys use more the end jaw or centre jaw cardellini's? i find both are handy but more the end jaw..

Cardellinis are my favorite clamp - bear in mind there are many different types of them. They are more versital and the clamp I pick first from box.

I also have mayfers, only because if you look hard enough you can find them for a little over 20 bucks, whereas the cardellinis and matellinis cost from 45 to 75 each.
