Did some diy this week, came out cool, works good, but I do not know what it is called he he,

made two of 'em. Just to have it black anodized and they'll look great.

Here is some pics:

Its some kind of tripod bowl accessory whatever it is. Nice bit of engineering. Be sure to shotblast it down before you anodize it though, or you will get tool marks.

Just out of interest, what are you using as your black anodizing dye?

thank you, it's an awesome feeling when you make your own stuff isn't it!

Thanks for the tip on the shotblasting, appreciate that, didn't even think of that, should help to create a nice even finish!

I know you could probably do the Anodizing DIY with foodcoloring (http://astro.neutral.org/anodise.shtml), but I owned a Hot Dip Galvanizing plant that I sold last year, and had enough with playing with chemicals thank you, so I am taking it to a company here in South Africa called Astro Anodising, to have it done. I'll ask 'em what type dye is used.

I used about 30 tons of 30% Hydrocloric acid every three months, and it is not even close as nasty as sulphuric acid (even oif it is only a few litres), I really don't wanna mess with it, and to discard that class of chemical aint easy either, so taking it to a shop to have done seems the best (read "easiest") route.

Looks great. I've been looking to do something like that. Can you tell me how you machined the top and bottom of the bowl itself in the top plate? Was it done in a lathe?

yeah, it was done on a lathe, you just customize the turning tool profile for either side, and take it easy when machining. the inside profile is not as important as the outside (bottom) profile, the top is really only supported by the top bevel.

a CNC lathe would obviously be easier.

Well so far ive not tried it. Ive got some very fine black powder paint that im going to try. Apparently black is the hardest colour to anodize, so im trying to find the best thing. I know commercial anodizing inks are quite expensive, especially black ones...

I'm not sure I understand what you are asking, but does this answer your question:

I use a bucket of H2so4, 98 percent pure mixed half and half with distilled water. There is a cathode in the acid, and I attach the annode to the piece. I then wire that up to a car battery.

Im going away in the morning for a shoot, il post some pics when i get back.

jason, you can really easily do that at home, you just have to be super super careful with H2SO4 (sulfuric Acid), it only really becomes very aggresive when heated, so you should be ok, but,

YOU SHOULD ALWAYS ALWAYS have agricultural lime to neutrilize the acid when it comes into contact with somehting it shouldn't.

Also always add the acid to the water, not the other way around, otherwise you're gonna have a splashy affair!!

Hoarp, that pics would be cool!
