Made a mess...

As Steve said. The original DVD is probably fine, so if you can get it back, rip and reburn, you should be fine.

update. Talked to her not mentioning I lost footage just said that I dont like leaving stuff a year behind and would like to get the payment owed for the DVD I provided and she said no problem... Now does this mean she will actually send it? Knowing her no. But we will see.

you did this wedding for $500? no wonder they don't feel any urgency in paying you
like gi jones said, go over and say you want to test their DVD for skipping...then rip it
there's a bunch of free programs on the net you could try on your failed HDD
Data recovery a huge industry rife with tons of pit-falls and rip-offs
only top executives of top companies bother with professional recovery companies
the rest of us use the free programs
how do I know? don't ask...

2 ways to go:

1. Tell them the DVD works fine when it left your office, sue them over the last 50% and loose not only a customer but get bad mouthed with everybodey they know and loose jobs.

2. Ask them to send you the skipping DVD, make a copy and see if it works or at least transfer the film from DVD to your NLE and burn a new one.

I work in sound so my backup sizes are smaller, but I would still backup the DVD project file and assorted media. That should not take more than 1 DVD, 2 at most. Keeping the raw media for an extended time is probably not all that practical if the prospects of using it again are small but I would have expected you to vault the DVD project.

That said it's too late now. I would add my vote to getting the original back and burning a copy (and saving one!).

You should also be able to save a media managed version with out too huge a cost in HDD space but...

To fret over a year old gig for half-payment is to not have any gigs lined up. To not have any gigs lined up means networking is in order. Spend the time you'd spend recovering that old stuff on networking.

Hahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

You got burned. 250 bucks from a year ago. No biggie.

I don't do weddings but I always get balance when I give the final. Live and learn. Let it go

Shot a wedding reception last year and everything went well edited it made it look great mailed it to the client. I got my first 50% before shooting but didnt get my other 50% because "The DVD skips" I test all of my DVDs on 3 players. I know the DVD doesnt skip. I told them I would be happy to send them out another one when they said that they want to add in some stuff to and will pay me extra. So after waiting 4-5 months I finally tell them I want to get this project over with and ask them to pay me the other 50% they owe me. They ask if I can burn them another DVD and mail it to them because the other one "skips". I say sure... I go back into my FCP and I have a ton of media offline stuff from when I had a drive crash on me. This job was 12 months ago... What should I do.

1) Ask for the original DVD you sent them, replicate it, then send them both back and tell them they need to buy a new DVD player.

2) Never wait that long to get paid. Ever.
