Maddening Behavior in Vegas 6

Hello all,

First post and I am looking for a couple of answers. I have finally started to use this copy of Vegas I bought over a year ago. I've been working with Premiere for the past couple of years.

Ok, so I am doing a basic project. Has a 1hr video, with one still overlayed at the beginning.

Workflow:

1. Insert still on Track 1, 5s
2. Insert primary video+audio on track 2-3.
3. Add Media Generated black on track 1 to crossfade to for fade out.

Pretty simple right? Here's my questions.

A. When I insert the video event, I trim the front to my lead in. I want the overlay on track one to be fully faded at 00:00:03:20. I go to shorten the time of the still on track 1 to 3 seconds and change, and watch in horror as Vegas ALSO trims my video and audio on track 2-3. Why is it doing this? These are independent events on seperate tracks. I thought it was an anomoly so I started a new project. Same behavior.

B. I want to do a simple crossfade from Track 2 to Track one. Is there ANY way to do this simply? Right now, I am putting a transition on, right-clicking, and telling it to change to crossfade. I do NOT want to put the media generated black on the same track as the long video event.

C. In looking at the scope when I scrub the media generated black, it's digital black. I cannot seem to get it to be Black-16 (i.e. NTSC Black). Any easy way to do this?

I'm generally enjoying learning about Vegas, but some of it's quirks are VERY frustrating.

Thanks,

-P

A) You must have grouped the events on the different tracks. Click one of them and press "U" for ungroup.

B) Put your cursor on the upper corner of the clip until it turns into a pie piece. Then drag inward -- this is a fade envelope.

C) Click on the little film icon in the top corner of the black card. Go to the properties tab. You'll see the RGB color values. Change them all to 16.

DOH!

Stupid Technology!

I've got a new problem now.

Just shot some test footage at 24pa. Tried to capture into Vegas. Get an exception every time. I've never tried progressive footage imports or 24fps imports, so I don't know what is going on. When I start a new project in Vegas, what should my initial settings be? Do I leave it at 29.98, or set it to 24fps, or 23.xxx or what?

It sux when your camera is smarter than you! :)

I'll download the tutorial after work.

I upgraded to 6.0d and magically I can import the file just fine. Not sure WHAT was going on there.

I'm going to try to play with the other things posted in just a few minutes here.

Thanks everyone.

Well that sucked.

You should have just said: "Shut up and edit." Would have been just as effective! But thanks for the tutorial. Answered some questions for me.

I did notice going back into my project that my timeline was NOT set at 24p but rather at 60i. Not sure what that did to me. The media was correct, and it dropped on ok. I was able to export ok as well.

I just went in and converted the timeline like the video said I could and...nothing happened except it worked like advertised.

Great tutorial man. Thanks very much.

What kind of an "exception" do you get?
