So I have an older Mackie system and was wondering how and if it is able to work with my G5 or Mac Pro, both have Kona LHe cards. I would like to use Soundtrack Pro or even Logic with the Mackie. Is this possible? Necessary?

Isn't that an analog mixer? You still need an A/D converter. So yes it will work fine with FCP. BUT you need what goes between them, ie A/D converter.

I have a Mackie 24/8 board and use a MOTU 2408mk3 firewire audio interface along with Logic 8 Pro. The audio ins/outs are connected to each of the 8 busses.

Not necessary unless you plan on adding lots of simultaneous analog audio to your mixes. In my case, I have a whole bank of synthesizers and samplers in addition to a slew of microphones for recording analog instruments (guitars, drums, etc.) into my soundtracks. The interface also has a number of digital ins/outs you can use as well. http://www.motu.com/products/pciaudio/2408. If you just plan on adding mono or stereo analog audio, there are a number of other cheaper audio interface options besides the one I use which can be found on Google.

Cheers,
