MACK warranty, once and for all

OK, I've searched this forum and the net, but have found no definitive word on "Is the 2- or 4-year MACK extended warranty really worth the money?" I'm running out of time to purchase one, and would like to know if it's a must-have. (If so, 2 or 4?)

I'm in the same boat. Are these things worth it? Do they include cleanings?

And do you need to send them to the place you buy it from or can you go to ANY Mack associate? I've asked the stores these questions but they never respond.

I've got mine, haven't had to use it yet. Good to have, even if strictly for piece of mind.

I did see on the Mack site that you have to pay to get it to them and then pay them $20 to send it back to you. Another thing to consider--though I don't know if this makes the decision or not.

I guess one question is how much is a head cleaning? And what are the common repairs that a DVX user might encounter? And how much do they cost?

Re: MACK warranty, once and for all

From what I can tell, the main problem a DVX might develop is heads/tape transport, which is covered by the MACK warranty. The warranty also includes a free cleaning per year.

Barry_S posted an awesome guide to cleaning the heads; it's a sticky in the hardware forum. I fully intend to clean my own heads when the time comes. I would suggest anyone who has steady hands do the same. If your camera sees a lot of hours, you're going to need more than one cleaning a year anyway, so just learn to do it yourself.

I bought the 2-year warranty for $120 from Rush at EVS. And if I never need it, it was a small price to pay for "peace of mind." Besides, if I want to sell the cam and upgrade to an HDV cam or whatever, the warranty is transferable for a $15 fee.

Oh yeah, the first thing I did after I received my DVX was list it on my homeowners policy. Much better coverage than MACK--they said it would even cover accidental damages (i.e. some kid knocking it over at a wedding)!

Re: MACK warranty, once and for all

Good tip on the homeowners. I'll have to see if mine works that way too.

I think I'll also go for the 2 year. Since I will be shooting in the woods a lot, you never know what can happen.

And last night I finally (after tons of research) ordered my DVX. I can't wait for it to get here.
