MacIntel - Apple to Use Intel Chips?

Completely believable. Why? IBM hasn't been too swift in furthering the PowerPC processor
at the same rate of speed as Intel. Whatever happened to talks of dual core G5's and switching
to more efficient processor designs which didn't require a liquid cooling system? That's why there
aren't G5 Powerbooks. This has been in rumors for several years and I wouldn't put it past them.

And AMD and Intel are also finding it very hard to boost their chip speed still further.....

But look at the Xbox360, it's running on PPC. Look a the Cell chip, again from IMB and PPC based, but for the Playstation.

Who knows.....maybe if M$ ends up liking the IBM chips in it's Xbox 360.....Maybe there will be a Windows PPC Edition?? Now wouldn't that just whip the llama's ass?

But in Apple's case....I'd bet this is just rhetoric. It would seem that Apple is trying to get some leverage on IBM just as the article states. The push for 3.0Ghz Powermacs are WELL overdue. Can't blame Steve Jobs for that. He doesn't make the chips.....He just makes the *Keynote* speeches!!

I'm a PC guy, but I'd love to see Mac stay with the G5's and also move to the Cell architecture. I mean, for video work, Apple's forte, it'd be supremo.

Don't forget Nintendo -- IBM pulled off a hat trick this generation, since it's also fabricating the CPU in the "Revolution" console. (The GameCube currently uses a PowerPC derivative as well.) Pretty amazing, and a big loss for Intel.

Anyone else remember the “IBM is Big Brother” Apple commercial which won all the awards?

Oceana has always been at war with Eurasia . . .

(Cell should be cool.)

Does the current GameCube have multiple chips? I don't think so. The current GameCube uses a chip designed by a company ATI acquired a few years ago. Dave Orton, became President and CEO of ATI... It is not a PowerPC derivative, is it?!

This dialogue has heated, cooled and resurfaced later more than once. Apple gains a little leverage over IBM by stating that they're shopping and Intel stocks bump for a week or two.

Mac is a small [chipset] segment and I doubt that (with Jobs at the helm) they'll gain much enterprise share of market no matter what chipset resides in their fancy boxes.

Apple has long driven sales to artists and niche users - I strongly doubt a move away from big blue is going to get them where this "move" is designed to. It would be great to have enterprise Mac solutions, but they might well enjoy an unseen negative effect if they piss off their classic core users by marketing to corporate America. "Stick it to Jobs - don't buy his sell-out machines. Please pass the patchouli oil and that big-ass spliff!"

Perhaps people will start writing applications for Mac again? Who knows! I, for one, hope they gain some share, because it will push Microsoft harder toward more watershed mimickry of Apple's best design and OS concepts.

PC users can't argue that we've all benefited from the good work done in Cupertino.

Oh, absolutely. I wish Apple WAS more competitive, and I wish there were even more choices than that. Competition breeds excellence.

I wish I wasn't so vested in PCs - four up and running in my home at present. I really would like a FCP machine for my home movies!

My director friend, Kelleth Chinn, cut his entire SDX film on his FCP / G5 in his basement. Don't know what peripherals he had running, but the end-result is pretty amazing!
