MacBook suddenly won't play DNxHD files - neither in NLE nor video player

Any idea what might be causing this? I've tried reinstalling the Avid codecs, but to no avail. In NLE's the files come out black, but you can sometimes hear fragments of the sound. Same in VLC. Quicktime won't open them at all, and neither will MPEG Streamclip.

The same files played perfectly a couple of months ago, but I just recently returned to the project. It's not just the files connected to this project - I've also tested new files directly from my Hyperdeck.

did you install any other codecs aside from prores/apple and avid on your machine? i remember ther was a codec pack that caused issues, can't remember the name though... I suppose you are editing on avid, hence the use for dnxhd?

I don't think I've installed any codecs since the last time I used these files. I actually use Premiere, not Media Composer, but I don't think it makes any difference. The camera shoots DNxHD.

What OS are you running? It could be in part to Quicktime 10 not being able to recognize older codec files (there is a whole thread concerning this on Apple's website: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5588482).

I recently wasn't able to transcode in Compressor some DNxHD files i received from a producer. I opened them individually in QT7 and exported them to ProRes, which worked. I just went back and tested some older DNxHD files and they converted fine in compressor.
