Macbook Pro won't recognize .mov files???

Hi everybody,

I am trying to burn my short film, Succumb onto DVD's for my cast and crew. I've got a strange problem. My Macbook Pro (2.5 core 2 duo, running 10.5.8, 2 g Ram) won't recognize the uncompressed .mov movie file. It will however recognize the compressed Quiktime file. Specifically, I attach my hard drive to my laptop and I can see the compressed file in the preview window, but the .mov file is blank. Now I can hear the audio when I hit the play but no video.

I can see these .mov files on my desktop. The only difference is I have FCP installed on the desktop and not the laptop. Before you suggest it, I can't install FCP on my laptop because the desktop is an old G5.

Heck, they're all quicktime files, shouldn't I be able to see it on my laptop? I feel like it's an easy solution but I'm not seeing it. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

thanks!
Jonathan

That's the difference then. Many codecs only come with FCP, even though they are QT codecs. I can't imagine this being ProRes though, since even Windows-Quicktime supports ProRes playback, so what format are they encoded in?

Hi Douglas,

I exported using quicktime movie without changing any of the presets. The movie is in 720P recorded on the HVX200 and HPX170. Does that help? Sorry, I'm a big dummy when it comes to this encoding stuff.

I assume that means you worked in native DVCProHD format, which is likely *not* supported without FCP.

Did you export a reference movie? When exporting from final cut pro did you select export "quicktime movie" or "using quicktime conversion"? If you selected "quicktime movie" and did not check the box that says "make movie self contained" then you exported a reference file, and any computer that does not have all of the source material and I believe final cut pro installed will only play the audio and not the video. One way around this is to check the "make movie self contained" box, then you should have a file that will play on a computer whether or not it has final cut pro installed, but I'm not positive about that.

Thanks for the feedback guys, I appreciate it. Yeah, the box was checked, so it's got to be a DVCPro codec issue.
