And dead sexy I might add!

No really, my laptop (MBP 2.16 core duo 17") gets pretty hot but it doesn't seem to be effecting the computers performance. I have istat pro installed and it shows my CPU A as up to 185 degrees Fahrenheit (that's the most I've ever seen it) usually it peaks around 176 degrees. The fans don't seem to kick in until the temp hits 170 or so.

Is this normal or should it be something to worry about? And, is there anyway I can control my fans manually to have them turn on at a lower temp?

Thanks for any help.

Mine usually runs pretty hot when I'm doing rendering and such, but for just ichat, mail and safari, I can comfortably use it on my lap. Right now CPUA is at 115ºF.

I've got the 17" 2.6GHz, and I used to have a 17" 2.4GHz. The 2.6 hasn't been so hot, while the 2.4 was quite hot most of the time. I'd call up apple and ask them whats normal for your machine.

theres a neat program called "smcFanControl"
google it and it should come up
made for intel macs and you can control the fan settings

enjoy!

The problem with messing with your fan is that the mac should really control the fan itself, and if its not, I think there's an issue with the mbp.

The upgraded MBP Core2duo 17 (fall 2006) came with redesigned larger vents at the base of where the display hinges allowing for more heat to dissipate. The heat was a known issue at the time with the earlier model but was never a show stopper.
Keep the underbelly clear enough for air to circulate.
