MacBook Pro Firewire 400 and 800 at same time?

Trying to capture DV footage (canon Optura 300) via Firewire 400 to my Firewire 800 Maxtor 600 GB drive via Universal FinalCut Pro. Clearly the two are conflicting somehow. I can get it the setup all the way to Capture Now but then the system freezes, and then typically boots the Maxtor offline.

Any guidance is appreciated.

HVX200 is on order. Until then I have a lot of legacy DV to contend with.

Interesting- it should work. I bought an Intel iMac recently and it seems to crash every time I try to import via my Canon GL1. The DVX works fine though. Wonder if there is a problem with Universal binary FCP and Canon cameras.
 
I have previously read about people having trouble capturing from Canon cameras into FCP - way before the Intel chips or Universal binary version...I use a Sony on my
G5 to capture onto my external LaCie, and have had no problems - I'm on the Universal binary FCS now too.
 
well, at least I'm not the only one. Luckily with HVX I'll be able to run my mini-dv through that route.

I have never had a problem with my Canon ZR100 on FCP 5.0.4
