I have an external sata seritek card for my powermac and all I can say is that the transfer speeds are extremely fast, significantly faster than fw800 (I have both an external fw800 and sata). This new card supports SATA II which on paper is twice as fast as sata I. Not a bad option to consider if you want a fw800 alternative for your macbookpro.

Based on specs.
Firewire = 400 Mbps (50 MB/sec)
Firewire 800 = 800 Mbps (100 MB/sec)
Sata I = 1.5 Gbps (150 MB/sec)
Sata II = 3.0 Gbps (300 MB/sec)

This card supports "1-lane 2.5Gbps ExpressCard/34" so I'm not sure if this means that Sata II transfer speed will be constrained to 2.5 gpbs.
