Macbook Pro 2.16 15"- adequate for P2?

I feel strange asking this as I have had this laptop for over a year and edit on it daily. However, I am about to shoot a feature and have been looking at Mac Pro 8 cores (while salivating). The issue with my laptop is the canvas window, and the window that shows P2 video while capturing. The P2 window never displays video well (stutters), making it quite difficult to mark in and out points accurately, etc. The canvas window is generally not quite as bad, but sometimes can be. It often looks like a 12fps youtube video. Is my problem the fact that I'm not using an external monitor? (I started editing video in the days when you used your VX-1000 as an interface to drive the monitor and it looked great- just got back into video work recently). Or do I need a Mac Pro?

A Mac Pro would definitely help if you could get it. Otherwise at least upgrade your RAM and get an ExpressCard to eSATA adapter for eSATA external drives. That should make footage play back better.

I have 3gb of ram and use a fairly fast FW800 drive to edit. Will an eSATA drive definitely improve playback over this configuration? ANy recommendations for a particular drive?

Hmm. I have the same laptop with only 2gb of ram and never have issues with P2 footage. You might want to try setting your RT tab to medium resolution if it's set to dynamic. And playback to full. Also, maybe your ram isn't in matching pairs (same brand and specs), which I heard can impede performance.

Thanks, that may have helped the canvas window. So am I the only one with serious lag issues with the P2 import window?
