macbook and fcp

i read somewhere a while back that final cut would not run on a macbook, not pro, but regular. my girl wants to upgrade from her ibook to a macbook but i'm a bit skeptical and wanted to make sure if this first. thanks d00ds.

According to the specs for FCP on Apple's website, FCP cannot run on an intel mac that uses a graphics processor. The exact quote is: "Final Cut Studio is not supported on systems using the Intel Extreme Graphics 950 GMA"

The MacBook and the Mac Mini both use 950 GMA processors.

from what i've heard final cut works fine, it's motion that doesn't run to smoothly on the macbook. i'd max out the ram on that thing though

FCP runs fine.
Motion has issues.
Thing is that the specs are appliede to the neediest of the studio apps.
Funny thing, though - is that Shake ha no problems with MB -;)

Someone I was working with had it installed on a Macbook, they tried to run it and an error box came up saying something like "incompatible graphics card" and FCP refused to run.

Is there a way around that?

oh dang whats up cookie, how ya been?

and i wouldnt really be needing motion, just fcp for some on the go type of stuff.

If you select the option just to install FCP (Compressor and DVD SP is also nice for the road...), you should be fine.

I'm confused. What do you mean when you say that motion won't run smoothly on a macbook?

Motion is dependant on a GPU to do it's RAM - renders. The MacBook does not have separate GPU RAM, thus:
Motion is not supported.

You may be able to make it run (dunno) - I think there are some hacks "out there" to get it installed, but you'll lose so much functionality, that it isn't recomended.

That's what I'm wondering about. When we tried FCP on a MacBook, it just wouldn't run at all. Brought up a dialog box complaining about the graphics card and then quit.

It's not that it wouldn't run "as fast as an MBP" or something, it wouldn't run *at all*. So I assume there is some manner of hack to get past it?

I'll try it, but Ive based my assumptions on reports over at Creative COW and these links:

I do have a MB to test it on, I'm only a bit short on time... -;)
Maybe over the weekend.

But I can see how this could happen without extra RAM, as the system alone eats 512 MB and you'd like at least the same for FCS, especially as the MB shares ram for the integrated GPU with the system.
Personally I find the MB a fine machine... with 2Gb of RAM. At standard config, even the most basic Finder operations seems sluggish. With full RAM it's almost up to par with my 2.16 MBP on dayly tasks.
