Macbeth Chart

I've seen Macbeth Charts being shot before a scene and know its used for color correction. My question is should you white balance before shooting the chart? Also what if your key light is gelled? Last question: If you were preparing for a shoot which may eventually be transferred to film, what charts would you use (i.e., color, gray, focus)?

Re: Macbeth Chart

You should use a MacBeth card after you have white balanced. If you are using a gel on your keylight, it will depend on its purpose. Are you using a colored gel to give a colored effect or to match the color temp of another source. If you want the gel to act as a neutral color, then white balance the camera with the keylight on and then shoot the Macbeth card. If you are using the gel as an effect color, then shoot the Macbeth card without the keylight or with the gel off.

A Macbeth card alone should handle most of your needs. It covers the color gamut and the grayscale range.
