mac versus pc

hi,

we're building a studio. our work stations are half pc and half mac. this seems to be a bottleneck as files cannot be transferred from one platform to another, instead they have to be recorded in real time which ties of two machines. are there ways of easily transferring video files between mac and pc?

also, i am pushing to go either mac or pc instead of both. what are the pros and cons of mac and pc?

it's my impression that pc offers a lot more plug ins and third party software.

some people think mac is more stable. is that true?

what are pros and cons? mac versus pc? are my instincts correct that mixing mac and pc in a production house is unwise? we do alot of animation and stuff in after effects.

thanks
brian

I see no one answered your post, which is too bad.

I don't know the answer either, except to say whenever I ask people trained on macs, they say 'get a mac'.

When I ask them what specifically makes the macs better, I never get a good answer. They usually say macs are more stable, but I do video editing on a pc with premiere pro, and it has never crashed.

Whenever someone says 'Platform X is just... better' I take it to mean they don't know what they're talking about, they just more used to that platform.

My personal thought is whatever platform you're more familiar with is the best. I know a lot more about pcs and windows than about macs. So I'm much more capable at supporting upgrading a pc than mac.

My 2 pennies... :)

They both work fine. If you have PCs use those. If you have Macs, use those. If you have neither, play with the programs on both and decide which you like best. If money is a serious concern go PC. If you want to piss off Hudson, go Mac and then proselytize about it...

You can't network them? Coulda swore Mac and PCs could coexist on a network.

Also: Firewire should work. (It'd better work, it's an Apple thing, originally. )

Now, file compatibility...that I don't know about. Big-endian, little-endian, and all that.

I used to run a network with PCs and Macs. It can work, and it's a major pain in the neck. If you've got all PCs, no biggie. All Macs, same thing. Put them both together, mix in Windows 98, ME, MX, and Mac OS 8.6, 9, and 10, and you'll find yourself at the nuthouse in no time. Just try sharing a printer across all those systems...I dare you! It's enough to drive a grown man to tears...

If, however, you're using one Windows and one Mac version, things get a lot simpler. Still, I'd rather be on one or the other if I'm gonna be the person fixing the problems. I should mention that I'm a satisfied Mac user...and I'd rather have all PCs than have them mixed together...

Let the application pick the platform, not the other way around.

If your job is to support your users, then having one or the other and not both would seem like a valid approach.

Well, it seems this site has a very wide range of posters, from the total newbies to very experienced. I've asked questions, then a got a bunch of people complaining this question has been answered before, and a bunch of people saying they didn't know the answer either.

Searching through all the threads for the answer isn't always easy either - threads are conversations, not concise explanations.

Is it possible to compile a technical faq about all these questions that come up? The high def questions, mac vs pc questions, etc, etc. When people post a question anyway, kindly direct them to that list. It will take getting used to, but it might ease some angst.

This question, more than just about any other, seems to bring out answers based upon conviction rather than answers based upon actual facts. It just about as inflammatory as asking about which is the "correct" religion and implying that all others are invalid.

For me, its is the applications that I intend to utilize that make the decision. Since the PC world offers all that I need and the MAC world does not, its a fairly simple one for me. Others will have differing opinions, so based upon experience, some based upon the desire to validate their personal choice.

Best of luck on getting anything close to a concensus from this or any board on this particular question!
