.mac users?? iWeb??

I've posted a few times recently as I've been trying to decide how to set up my website. I'd love to hear if anyone has used iWeb or .Mac. They seem really easy to use. Just a bit more expensive than some other options. But, I'm leaning towards the convenience may be worth paying a little extra. I'm looking for feedback on this software and webhosting option.

it is really easy to use. I got iWeb, then a mac account. I then got a domain through GoDaddy. That way people don't have to type in that long .mac name.

It is easy to change your website. If you know how to do file transfers and the host lets you use macs that is a good way to go.

I use iWeb for my site, but I go directly to godaddy for hosting without using .mac. I just publish to the folder on my hard drive, then use their FTP to upload.

I like iWeb because it is easy and does the job, but we found someone to design our new site with something a little more versatile.

My wife built an incredible looking website using Iweb, using all the cool graphics - then we found the time to load the site was equally incredible,
like 30 seconds or more per page on DSL. We built a slightly less incredible
site elsewhere that loads fast.

My site takes about 30 minutes to load, if I upload the whole site at once, but it has a bunch of video files, some ove 6 minutes long. I just upload it before I go to bed.

Jim do you use a template for your site? Did you make it yourself? I have two sites I set up in iweb. Now I have a new machine, the sites arent on i web anymore :S How do I remiport them back into iweb to edit? Ive tried eveything (almost).

I'm not sure about that. Whenever I open iWeb it just goes to the one I work on..which is the only one I've ever worked on. Maybe someone with more experience...?

AS for my site, I just use the blank black pages and throw in a gradient fill. It's really basic and shows my lack of skills  Which is why I need someone to help me with my next one.

Sorry I cant be more help. Have you tried the apple/iweb user group?

I use iWeb for my site, 86streetstudios.com because its just so simple.

It will be alot faster to upload if you dont embed the videos into the pages, and instead link to them somewhere outside of your websites folder. Thats how my downloads page is.

The videos are on the same server but not in the websites folder that i upload, so i can upload the website with a new version in like 2 minutes.

I do the same, publish to a folder on my hard drive, then upload that folder to the server via FTP. I also am domained through go daddy, but use dvxhost.com for hosting.

taken from macosxhints.com, but modified for your scenario

When opening iWeb on another computer that is connected to .Mac, you will be presented with a blank iWeb site to start from scratch, and you cannot open a previously-created iWeb site to edit. The file that keeps track of this all is ~/Library/Application Support/iWeb/Domain.sites

move this file on a thumb drive to the same folder on your new computer and you are done. I move mine between my macbook pro and G5 on a regular basis

I do the same between my macs as well. the domain file has package contents that contain all the assets that have been added and saved into the project files.

Thanks for the feedback. I'm convinced. I ordered iLife (iweb) today. After I test it out a little I guess I'll have to decide if I want to go the dot mac route or venture into the real web...

Hope it all went well. Check out Jordan F. @ www.dvxdata.com for hosting options. Hes great and cheap. Personal, too which imo, is what matters. Not some stuffy business. Just a good guy!

Those prices seem very cheap. Is it easy to upload an iweb built site to them? What about the site going down... does it happen often? My iLife arrived yesterday, so now I guess it's time to break open the package and see what I can do.

I havnt had the server go down once. Just email Jordan and hell tell ya how it works. I dont want to try and do his business for him, but let me say ive had 100% uptime.

Its easy to upload. Say you buy your domain from Godaddy.com.

You upload your site to the server you buy from dvxdata.com, then in Godaddy.com account preferences, you tell it that when people go to www.yoursite.com , redirect them to the folder you uploaded your website to.

You can even use the dvxdata.com as server space for your personal stuff , and hosting your files and what not, and access it through FTP. Works great. I use fetch to FTP everything. Never had a problem and Jordan has always answered all my questions quickly. Plus hes into digital video and movies like all of us.

I've tried to email Jordan 2x and both got returned undeliverable. That's not a good sign. Do you have an alternate email for him? I've sent it to the email listed on dvxdata.com.
