I'm thinking about getting a pc laptop solely for using DV Rack. I don't know dick about PC, can someone point me to a model that is compatable with DV RAck's requirements. Also, is there a way to export the digital video file generated in DV RAck into my G4? Thanks .

You can get a Dell Laptop for cheap and it will get the job done....but you will get what you pay for. Dell also has some upscale XPS models as well.

Toshiba have some of the best PC laptops, as does IBM. They are a bit more pricey but in general are well worth it and all will surpass the requirements for DVRACK.

You also have Compaq, HP, Sony, eMachines and a million others to choose from. Check out the numerous reviews by searching on Google and you should find one in your price range.

I always buy from Dell and have been satisfied with 5 purchases over the last handful of years. I'd go XEON of course.

5 purchases in as many years??? Doesn't sound like good odds to a Mac person.

HA!!!

Anyway -- Dell has always been good to my wife and I. We've got two dells and just bought her Dad one last month.

Not for video, but a great company I'd recommend. Um... after Mac.

where the M stands for MAC!

The easiest way to get clips recorded by DV Rack onto your editing system (regardless of what platform it is) is to record to an external hard drive. When you're done shooting, simply unplug the external drive from the laptop and plug it into your editing system.

Our policy at Serious Magic is to not recommend particular brands of computers--or conversely to steer customers away from certain manufacturers. That said, I'll go out far enough on a limb to note that a) our technical support desk keeps stats on the types of calls, and b) of the calls we receive from customers with Toshiba laptops, a disproportionatly small number end up in the "just called to say what a fan I am" column. Draw your own conclusions.

One other thing to keep in mind as you laptop shop--If you plan on getting the HDV PowerPak upgrade, spend the extra bucks to get more CPU horsepower. We haven't nailed down the minimum specs, but it'll probably be in the neighborhood of 2.4 GHz minimum with a strong recommendation of 3-3.2 GHz.

Compaq is a good place to get a well priced laptop. They are on the cheaper end of the price spectrum, but they are owned by HP, so their products are topnotch.

Good point PK. That might be one of the advantages to Apple going with Intel. That whole thing is going to take some getting used to... Pentium 4 Powerbook? Or, even worse, Mactel? Sounds too much like Mattel. The PC people should have fun with that one...

Mac will still be mac no matter what kind of chipset it's running. IBM makes PCs, but up to this point Macs have had IBM chipsets. The Mac world isn't going to change as drastically as people seem to think.

Mac is really about software. The changeover will probably make it easier for people to customize a little more within their budget. And I'm sure they'll still design them to look sexy for all those fanatics who've bought into the lifestyle.

thanks for the info, but how about this-does anyone have a laptop with DV Rack installed that they want to sell. I think I'm better off right now do this on the cheap, so if anyone is thinking about upgrading their whole system, I'd be interested in knowing what you might take for you current laptop with Rack on it. PM me if interested.
