Hey guys,

What software is generally used to copy a card (CF, SxS etc etc) to two external drives simultaneously to save time doing the master and backup copies to drives?

Cheers for your help in advance.

Chris

Don't need any software, for my last two features and subsequent projects I bought a G-Safe and dumped all data direct via a Macbook Pro. The G-Safe automatically mirrored the data onto the second drive. I used Samsung 2T high speed drives and the system worked flawlessly, finally one drive went to the editor to download to his working drive and the second into the safe. I never used the drives for any form of editing whilst in the G-Safe, though this is perfectly possible, as I wanted the system to simply store data with drives that are not over worked.

The big advantage was the mirroring, one data dump, two copies. The drives are easy to change so each project gets a dedicated pair of hard drives. Also if the G-safe detects a problem with one drive, it tells you, you load an new one and it then mirrors the existing data onto the new drive.

It's probably close to the most perfect system I have found to date and when compared to the cost of getting the vision, the G-safe plus drives for under $1000 is peanuts!

HughS thanks for the reply. I need something a little more run and gun. Basically shooting on location and need to hand off a drive on the spot to a producer or AP. Usually use Lacie rugged drives, one to hand off, one to keep for when it gets dropped or lost by the aforementioned individuals.

You can simply drag & drop the card contents into a folder on each drive.

If you want something that will verify the copies, you could use Carbon Copy Cloner to make 1 copy at a time.

I though there may be something quicker as I assumed both drives would be reading from the card separately and thus slow the process down? Ie that card would be read once and generate two copies.

There are a variety of different systems and the best is probably the one you develop for your own work flow, G-Safe suits mine and I also daisy chain Lacia Ruggeds on location when there is no power around, bottom line is making sure the data goes across clean and is verified. There is no right or wrong except when the AP gets an empty drive and the cards have been cleaned! Organisation and a system that you stick to I believe is critical and if an AP has to wait another 10 minutes or so while you follow your system to ensure all data has been dumped, so be it! Sure they might *****, but they will howl a heap more if something is not there! Data wrangling is all about YOUR system and sticking to it no matter what.

using automator, you can set a 'watch folder' to copy files to multiple folders. it's like a batch script that does a set of sequential instructions one after the other instead of you doing them manually you can make it activate using a command or a using a watch folder. google automator, it has a gui and you can record actions visually and using a mouse.
