Mac Pro

Hey All,

Looking for some tips. My Macbook Pro just died and I'm looking into buying a new Mac (this time a tower). Rumor has it that a new Mac Pro is going to be announced in January, should I wait to buy till then (price drop)? I'm looking to save as much money as possible, refurbished, used, no sales tax, whatever.. Currently eyeing this: http://www.macconnection.com/IPA/Shop/Product/Detail.htm?sku=8252536

Does anyone have any other reseller links? Or tips?

Thanks again,

Josh

You can never be sure what is going to come out at MacWorld, but it's always a good idea to wait and see, especially since we are only one month away. Last year, 2 weeks after MacWorld, they upgraded products left and right every week for 2 months, which was unusual for Apple (after following them since 1984). If you are desperate, you can also look for refurbs. When refurbs of a product come out, it's usually a good indication of something new coming out as well. Just keep your eyes peeled at MacNN.com every day to see what is going on.

Yeah you might as well wait at this point, unless there's something pressing going on now.

The link you setup is the same exact price as the apple.com mac pro. They are trying to trick you though. That is not the stock mac pro that is the quad core. The stock is an 8 core (2 2.8ghz duel core processors = 8 cores) which is worth the extra $200.

Oh snap the Nehalem is released. Wowza. Nope.. need a camera upgrade next.

Double thanks! That link certaintly is tricky, thanks for the tip LairHair. I'm trying to get the Macbook repaired to cover me till I can afford some kind of stable machine. I'll be waiting for January announcements and make a decision then. Happy Holidays everyone.

also,
I've never seen a better deal on an Apple computer than directly from apple itself. At best other places offer what is equivalent of the educational discount and, given that Apple is extremely lax in what qualifies as a "student" (ie: if you have an id from your community college that is 10 years old they'll accept that) it can't really see why you would buy the computer anywhere else.

On a side note, don't buy any upgrades from apple other than the graphics card.
OWC has memory at around half the price, and you can get hard drives and raid controllers from a variety of other vendors for wayyyy cheaper than apple prices

Don't get despondent yet. Like I said earlier:

Last year, 2 weeks after MacWorld, they upgraded products left and right every week for 2 months

Yep I got a new MP in early Feb. Needless to say I'm broke on computer budget.

dude wait for the I7 mac pros. I have the 3.0 2x quad cores and they rock, but the dual I7 quads will kill. Im guestimating that it'd be around 2.5~3 times faster than my setup.

I would say if you have the money buy the real thing. Personally I've decided to stay on track and go for the iMac (towers are coming down though). The irony of this topic is recently I just found out someone reviewed the "Action Filmmaking Workbook" besides talking a whole bunch of crap about me on Amazon.com, they jumped on me for even mentioning that Pystar existed.

They also said a lot of others things I didn't say in the book as it's Workbook so there's not a lot to say. I'm assuming they reviewed the wrong but even still half of what they said was a lie, at best "slightly" altered versions of the truth. (Obviously it was someone who knew me personally or from this forum). I only mention the company in passing in one of my books and I can't find any mention of it in the Workbook. They act I like told the world to buy Pystar instead of Macs. As much as I champion Macs I also know they're expensive and some people are poor. In a book where I talk about making your film even when you have little, I think it's fine to mention other options.

But back to the topic at hand I believe Pystar did say they would still do tech support even if they couldn't sale the computers anymore.

Try http://www.psystar.com/ before Apple closes them down. Check out the prices and the specs.

Been there. Done that. Essentially, to get a Psystar Mac, with comparable spec's to a 20" iMac (Core2Duo, 2GB, 320GB, with Firewire, WiFi, Bluetooth, Superdrive, and 20" LCD) you're still looking at $1041.99, or only $258.01 less than buying a 20" iMac from Apple.

Truly not worth the effort. What's amazing is that Psystar considers Firewire, WiFi, and Bluetooth capability OPTIONAL. They are not included as standard features on any of their PC's. And, the only reason they are somewhat cheaper than Apple, is because they use lower end commodity hardware, like Pentium4 chips, instead of Core2Duo's and a lame amount of RAM and hard drive space. And, a cheesy looking LCD screen. Did I mention they charge extra for the wireless mouse and keyboard?

Philosophically, I have no problem with what they're doing. It definitely IS legal, although perhaps a tad unethical in that they are enabling users to circumvent the EULA to their benefit. My main issue, is that, frankly, Psystar isn't competitive enough.

I'll take an iMac any day of the week, over a Psystar, but not because I'm elitist. iMac is a better value for the money.
