Mac Pro Ram Suggestions

I am on the verge of getting a new Mac (once Apple updates them), and I keep hearing that many people feel the Ram from Apple is overpriced. To go from 1 to 4 gig on the Educational Discount is about $650 at the time of purchase. If I wait to later, I have to pay an extra $200.

I really want 3-Gigs but that is not an option with Apple. Can anyone suggest a place and the exact kind of Ram I would need to match the Apple stock. Thanks.

Check out macmall.com. If you search for Ram for the system you want you'll find plenty of brands that will work just as well as the Apple branded RAM.

I would try local computer vendors (not big box stores). Tell them its for a Mac. Most around here will then supply the correct RAM. However, I think like Best Buy now sells Macs too (to a limited degree), so if they might do the trick (but not sure if you'll get the best price). If you're okay online vendors, there's always tiger direct (usually decent prices).

But if the 3 GB upgrade (to a total of 4 GB) is only $650 w/ the discount for you, I don't think that's too bad a deal, at least not from the Mac store, Plus then if you get from them the whole setup is protected under Apple Care. If you buy the Mac from a third party then you'll also have to deal with them seperately if you ever have any RAM related issues.

Cheers.

Thanks. The Mac Care thing is a good point. It's worth the extra money then. It would be nice though if Apple gave us a 3-Gig Option.
