Mac Pro Config / Video Card ??

Hi Guys:

I am thinking of purchasing a Mac Pro 2.66 Ghz, and wanted to ask what video card you would reccomend. I was thinking of geting the ATI Radeon X1900 XT for an additional $350, the stock card is an NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT 256MB.

Well -- not really...

If you do ANY Motion work this card will be 3x faster. I see FCP6 developing GPU integration that might include better RT effects and such. Don't know this for a fact... but -- seems where Apple is going now.

Also -- OSX5 will include CoreGraphics that will only be enhanced by the 1900. So if you ever wanted to upgrade to the 1900 it would cost you about 350 anyway. So the price is kind of ok to upgrade now.

Just my thoughts.

Supposedly though (on the downside...) the x1900 has texture limits that the 7300 doesn't have. Not sure how that might affect you - or me just yet... still trying to figure that out.

I wonder why Apple did not go with an NVIDIA 7950, 7900 or 7800 seires, or at least give the option?

Thanks Captain...

That alone sounds promising. I use motion here and there for silly effects.. It is really slow now...

Texture limits?Never heard the term....

Here is some info from BareFeats about it

"Apple's Mac Pro GRAPHICS page shows the X1900's specs and performance so close to the $1650 Quadro FX 4500 and so far above the GeForce 7300 GT that the choice is a no-brainer for most consumers and professionals. (You will have to wait 3 to 5 weeks to get the X1900 XT. We didn't want to wait that long so we ordered our Mac Pro with the GeForce 7300 GT."
