mac pro break in

does the mac pro take some time to break in. I upgraded from a duel core 2.0ghz imac with 2gb ram to a mac pro 8 core 2.8 ghz with 10gb ram and Its slower then my imac for FCP rendering. Its actually ridiculously slow. is it a matter of breaking it in or is there a problem with my machine. Iv only had it a week and have lightly used it.

I have a mac pro quad core with 8gb or ram and its the fastest thing I have ever seen, it was fast from day one, I think something is not right with yours it should be fast as hell, check your settings and activity monitor to see whats hogging the cpu and the ram.

and rendering in what? FCP will only use 2 cores. Compressor will only use two cores (if you haven't turned on virtual clustering). Also, how many/what kind of hard drives are you using? The stock drive is slow and shouldn't be used for anything media related.

To allow compressor to use more than two cores, you cannot "Export via Compressor" in FCP. You must first setup a virtual cluster using the Qmaster Pref Pane. Then Export a QT Movie out of FCP (doesn't need to be self contained). And bring that exported QT Movie into Compressor and submit with "use unmanaged resources..." turned on.

rendering effects or fast slow motion is really slow for the setup I think. Im using FCP 6. I have the stock 320gb hard drive and I have a lacie 500gb 7200 rpm hard drive as my scratch disk. could it be because I have 667 mhz ram instead of the recomended 800mhz. (it was a mistake from the store im swapping for 800mhz today)

you know, I have a PowerMac Quad 2.0ghz and a Mac Pro dual 2.66ghz and the Mac Pro cannot handle ProRes HQ, while the old PowerMac can. see? high quality is grayed out...

You've got 3 open HD bays in that bad boy. Pop in a couple 750gb Samsungs and make the stock drive just for project files, time machine, etc. They aren't that expensive (under $150) and have great performance. Don't put your media on external drives if you can help it.

Nope, 667mhz RAM (if you have enough) will not show any noticeable slow down in real-world apps.

Zak, your still set on "SafeRT" in that screen shot. Switch to Unlimited.

FCP will not use more than 2 cores by the way. Rendering your timeline won't be lightning fast, but outputting with compressor will be noticeably faster.
