Mac monitor vs. affordable dual screens

Hello Final Cut Pros,

I did a search and could not find this topic, maybe I missed it....

I am wondering what your opinion is about buying a mac monitor versus using that money for a 2 screen system with a more generic brand of monitor.

Would I be better off forking over the bucks for one Mac monitor, or using that $800+ for a two monitor setup?

If 2 monitor, could you recommend a size to buy (of course budget is always a concern, as usual.)

Best wishes, and any kind experienced comments will be met with most excellent Karma

Lots of praise is hyped on Dell and Sony LCD's and they are cheaper. But to my weary eyes there's nothing close to the pricerange that beats the look of the Apple displays.

If you can have a decent video-monitoring solution in addition to the computer screens, I wouldn't mind the Dell (I have both the Apple and Dell).

As a proxy solution for FCP and Digital Cinema Desktop monitoring: Apple. All the way.

But you'll always find more deskspace better.

I've got two 20" Dells...one is set up with the Cinema Desktop for FCP and I couldn't ask for more (most of my editing is 720p).

I disagree. I have two Dell 2405 24" monitors, and the Digital Cinema Preview looks great.

And the Dells beat the Apple monitors in EVERY catagory...hands down:

I've got two cheap CRT monitors. I know flat screens are the rage but CRTs are cheap. I have an HP and a Hitachi and the irony is I got them both for free from friends. They're big but I've got the space and they work. If you're you're short on cash you can get good CRTs cheap.

I have both -;)

for general computermonitor work - I agree. Totally.

For Digital Cinema Desktop preview - compared to my Panasonic 17" (LCD) Broadcast/Sony 14" CRT - Apple all the way.

Thing is that the FCS DCD is calibrated towards apple monitors. NOT that the Apples are better than the Dells.

(1) vs. (2)

(1) vs. (2)

Hey thanks for all the input!

I am still a bit confused about whether to simply *ONE* get an apple Cinema Display or something like 2 Dells. I use one now in a lab and it seems fine. I am more interested in the debate about why I would need (2) monitors over (1).

I viewed another recent thread where a user disagrees with the use of (2) monitors... any thoughts on the 1 vs. 2 idea? *smiles*

how about a different option...buy one other brand monitor now and save the rest til you can get the apple.

I have 2 great samsung 17" screens and I'm hoping to upgrade one of them to the 23" Apple this spring. And while the Dell 2405 screens were good, the 2407 is horrible for any type of video/image work since they've crippled the capabilities of the monitor to gain faster response times. So no, dell's are not universally superior...they serve different purposes.

I recently bought two 21inch Gateway LCD monitors, and while the monitors are wonderful, I find myself wanting just one large display. With two monitors I don't find it comfortable or easy to see the entire viewing area..... Sometimes I have to shift around a little to see things.

If I was you I would go for the one 30" apple display.

just my .02 cents.

Thanks, Transmission and Bigboss,

This is what I was looking for....I may go for the larger 23" display Apple and just pay the $$$ - I am working right now to spin some sort of discount for one, so we shall see :-)

Happy editing!
