Mac Mini

Re: Mac Mini

Short answer: no.
Longer answer:
Might work for FCP if you pay for the $425 RAM upgrade (still only 1 GB total), already have an external burner (or pay $100 for Superdrive), and also have external HD, and KDM.

Here's what Apple says about Motion:
Motion takes advantage of the Power Mac G5 to deliver highly interactive, real-time performance. Some systems provide greater interactivity than others, and it is important to choose the right system for your needs. Performance depends on the processor speed, the amount of RAM and the graphics subsystem.

Recommended system

Dual 2GHz Power Mac G5
2GB of RAM or more
Mac OS X v10.3.5 or later
ATI Radeon 9800 Pro graphics card or better

Re: Mac Mini

If you just upgrade the RAM, the mini will run FCP, but not Motion. I'm using FCP on an 800Mhz iMac, and it isn't that bad.

Re: Mac Mini

For a low cost alternative, you might consider an eMac if you need the screen and KB. I've seen Apple refurbs for $550.

That's the question that's been asked for a couple years now. Short answer, who knows. Hopefully before 2006.

Long answer, they're still dealing with cooling issues. Those chips can get MIGHTY hot.

Pretty sure the 9800 is open GL. If it comes in a mac that runs OSX then for sure. As for a G5 PB, yeah I hope they come out soon so I can get a discounted G4 12" PB. Word of advice: Don't by Revision A (first generation) of anything, especially a G5 PB - as there will be heating issues and all kinds of bugs and probably some kind of stupid white spot problem or the casing will be chipping cause they realized glass or linen or whatever the HOT material of the year is was a dumb move.

Yes most likely. For the newest FCE Express (2?) All you need is a G4 Processor. I don't know the specs for FCE HD though.

Check out:
http://www.apple.com/finalcutexpress/specs.html

I'm able to run FCE 1.0 on my Pismo (G3 400Mhz) and works great. I've also used FCP 1.0 & 2.0 on this machine. Don't worry, my main machine runs FCP HD (Dual 867 G4). Rule of thumb - the older the machine, use appropriate software (meaning older versions of programs) They will most-likely run smoother because that's what they were made for. I use Photoshop 7 with the G3 and it works great.

BTW - I run OS 10.3.4 on this G3 and 10.3.6 on the G4.

Re: Mac Mini

I run Motion on my machine and it works beautifully. G5 Dual 1.8 with 1.25 Gig of ram and Graphic card it came with. You don't need the dual 2 or 2 gig to get something you'll be happy with. Find a student and save some money that way. But, my friend uses FCP 4.5 on his 1 g powerbook. Runs fine with DVD Studio 3 also.

Re: Mac Mini

anyone have any info on how good FCE is. I had FCP 3 and used it for about 2 years but can't afford it right now. Any major drawbacks i should be aware of etc.....?
