For some reason, I'm a bit suspicious of this 'promotion'. For one thing, the product is called a Mac mini, *not* a mini Mac - which is how they refer to it. Plus the "Delivery Information" and "Complete Offer" links are ghosted-out and your only option on the page is to register (i.e. supply personal info to become part of their database).

??? :-/

Re: Mac Mini

Once you upgrade the RAM, can you realistically run FCP on this machine without too much of a problem? I don't just mean open the program but actually get around in it and do some real cutting without a lot of lag.

Re: Mac Mini

The BBC reviewer pretty much fesses up that technology isn't the issue, but he's definately twigged to the anti-corporate culture that Apple (whose name is Steve Jobs) is putting out.

Yes, yes. Apple gets points for slick marketing.

But, but!: have you actually driven an iPod? Hold it in your hand; it has weight (but not TOO much), somewhat like an expensive fountain pen.

It is a solid device; no worries about the thing breaking whilst on your three-mile jog. And the user interface is a genius-inspired relief. Not enough of that has been made in either marketing or press releases.

But look, here's the really significant deal, and I say this from the meritocratic-centric perspective of a former aerospace engineer:

The iPod, and the Mac mini, exactly fulfill their design specifications, which is, selling hardware.

Thats right. Apple is a HARDWARE COMPANY. It's what they do. Steve Jobs, who is the priest-king of that corporation, sees software only as a means to an end. And that end is moving product.

It shocks me to observe that one of Apple's great technological triumphs, that of making UNIX usuable by Mom and Pop, is going by virtually unnoticed by today's techno-pundits. Hello? Hasn't that been the Holy Grail of the likes of AT+T, Bell Labs, Xerox, DEC, IBM, HP, SCO, and a host of others you've never heard of? And here, Apple did it on their own, in an open source way, and quietly succeeded in order to make their HARDWARE more attractive.

This is Guttenberg printing press stuff. Really.

I gotta buy me a black turtleneck sweater.
