Mac Announcement Live

I wonder how well Final Cut (Universal) will run on the mini. I was going to buy a single G5 but this is cheaper.

pretty lame... no new ipod :(

Yeah, bummer... MacRumors predicted that:

Apple's Feb 28th Media Event takes place at 10:00am Pacific at the Apple Town Hall Building in Cupertino, California.

The most likely products for release include an iPod Boombox and the Intel Mac mini.

Meanwhile, Intel iBooks and Touch Screen iPods are said to be coming soon, but not necessarily at this event. Finally, some analysts are expecting a full blown Movie-download service from Apple.

Live coverage of the event will be limited due to the invite-only aspect of the event. MacRumors.com will link to live coverage and provide a running summary of events as they take place.

The rumormill around Apple products is insane. I follow it just as much as the next guy, but as a result I don't think I've ever been impressed with an Apple Media Event. Jobs could be like "We've increased the power of the Mac 100x, and we're giving a free one away to everyone in the world." and I'd be like eh, but you didn't annouce THIS thing.

That's so true.

If the Mac mini can edit DVCProHD with FCP that's impressive and if thats all you want to do then cool. Editing HD is not a processor but I/O intensive and I guess I can see how a Mac mini might accomplish that. But if you want to add effects [cool transitions, secondary color correction, multiple control layers and mattes] in FCP or using applications like Motion2 or After Effects I don't think the Mac Mini can do the job.

I have a dual 2.5GHz G5 with a GeForce 7800GT and 2GB RAM runing Motion and if I do anything remotely difficult the thing grinds to a halt. Nothing that elaborate, just using the dashboard and dragging and droping text presets etc.. It is very processor and GPU intensive. Either Apple is bending over its workstation customers or there's a lot more to this.

Considering where I go to school right now some of the Macs are running Final Cut 4.5 on dual 533 mhz G4's with 512mb of ram, I think the new Mac Minis will run it just fine.

since that program is pretty heavily GPU dependant and the Mac Mini has shared video memory with the ram, I really doubt Motion 2 will perform well on it.
