M2T files in, bad compression out ?? help me please

I'm importing HDV M2T files in editing them but when i export them ( as MPEG2, *.M2T). they are no where near as big, the quality is good but not as good as the raw file ( i know it never will be, but i'm sure it can be better ) what setting should i use to get the exported file THE BEST ( size is not a factor here, plenty on HD space ) or as close to the raw file ??? - marty.
 
bump, the reason i'm asking is becuase i' using magic bullet and to render out this piece of footage it will take 8+ hours... so i want to get it right this time around.. after waiting 8 hours for something to render that didnt look as good as it could have i was a litle pi**ed !.
