M2 Wobble

Ok, so here's a little tip about my experience with the Redrock M2 that might help other users out there. My company has been using the Redrock M2 for about a year with mostly good results. The edge sharpness has never been great but still not distracting. recently we noticed that as the batteries started to get low a wobble could be seen. It was most prominent towards the edges are wherever the picture was blown out. I did several searches and found some posts about shimming the motor and adjusting it so that its balanced. After several hours of fiddling with it the results were still far from improved. It was then I started to look more closely at the motor itself and realized who the real culprit was. The motor shaft was bent. It was almost imperceptible. I thought I could see it at times but the real test was to feel it as I turned the motor off and on. It was such a minor bend it could hardly be detected but the spinning gg amplified this imperfection and the farther from the center the more it was obvious. This is the reason for the wobble and the overly soft edges. There is no way to fix such a minor flaw in a motor. I searched the product number and quickly found several sights that carried this exact motor. I ordered one for 5$ and two days later I had it installed and was running wobble free. I thought it was worth posting as I've read several threads about wobble problems but none I have seen addressed this as an issue and I'm sure I'm not the only one.

Interesting - could explain why people post such varied reactions re: how sharp the Redrock is.
Maybe you should post where you got the motor. Did you contact Brian about this before buying your own replacement?

No I didn't contact him, it was past the warranty and I was in a rush to get it fixed. Once I figured out what the problem was I knew I could fix it in two shakes once I had a new motor, and they're cheap!
The motor in mine is the Mabuchi RF-500T-10750 I picked one up from smceletronics.com but you can also get them from surplusshed.com for .99 each.

Yeah, please do contact us. Generally we are really great about support for those kinds of things. We would have sent you a replacement motor. You should also check out a new(er) tutorial we have on adjusting the screen to ensure flatness (in the customer support area. )

Brian,
I'm not the person who had the problem, it was "waefre" above. I was just surprised he didn't contact you right away, as I figured you would have supportd him immediately like you just said.

Lack of edge to edge sharpness and wobbeling was one of ther reasons we got rid of our M2 and got an SGpro. But it's good to know for future reference. Thanks for the tip!

The two topics are related - if you have a problem with a part inside the adapter, it will affect the image, of course!

I just thought it might be something to look into if you're having problems with your M2. Otherwise you could spend hours trying to adjust every little thing and get nowhere. The M2 is an excellent adapter and I know you guys at redrock offer some really great support for your products. In my case I was troubleshooting after a shoot in which we were running AC to avoid the wobble and had several more days of shooting coming fast. I knew what we needed and it just seemed easier to order that night expediated and get on with the show. We've had no problems with it since and there is no detectable wobble even as the motor slows to a stop. Its really a beautiful little machine and can really step up a whole production to a new level. Kudos to you Redrock

I had a problem with the M2 making all kinds of noise when plugged into the AC adapter. One tiny drop of "miniature train" lube oil on the motor shaft fixed the problem and now the M2 is quiet. Just don't put too much on the shaft or it will splatter lubricant all over the cinescreen. The wobble is another thing, but can be adjusted. Just don't do it on the set, get your M2 ready to go before shooting and have tools.
