M2 upgrade or new LEX for EX1

I just received my brand new Sony EX1. I own the Recrock M2 with the standard SD achromat and tried to mount the ex1. It didn't surprise med to see a soft picture with bad edge-to-edge. If I choose to upgrade the M2 to the HD achromat, would I then get better edge-to-edge? The upgrade would then include the extra cost of a good monitor (Marshall?) and the cost for an M2 upgrade would easily match the purchase of a new Letus Extreme. The arguments to keep the M2 with the Ex1? Would those be the option to use smaller f-stops and a somewhat nicer bokeh - or what do you guys think? If anyone could point me to some footage of EX1 with M2 and the HD achromat - it would be nice.

Jacob.

Have you looked in the Redrock forums? I know there are a few members there with the EX-1 and M2. Maybe one of them could supply you with some footage.

Why not wait until the end of the month and get the microX - it flips your footage and comes with its own achromat (which you can use for HD), all for $350. It is allegedly much sharper edge-to-edge as well.

I'm not sure I follow your logic that if you upgrade your M2 you will also buy a Marshall monitor, but if you go with Letus Extreme, you will not need the monitor?? Or maybe I am reading your post wrong.

And yes, ability to stop down further and get nicer bokeh are the classic arguments in favor of the M2 (or SGPro), but it all depends on what you are shooting of course...

Like herbalmedia said, wait for the MicroX instead of spending all that extra cash. If you like the look of your M2, then why buy a Letus Extreme?

Thanks for your replies! I'm of course a little concerned of the extra light loss of 0.5 stop, where the LEX has 0.5 stop in total!!

The new MicroX is not currently supported yet. Redrock is actually advising people with the Ex1 not to buy the version that is being release the end of this month.
Read this,
microX Camera Compatibility

We recommend the current microX for all standard definition (SD) cameras, and high definition (HD) cameras with a few exceptions. While some users have reported good results with the Sony HDV cameras with filter sizes of 72mm or greater (such as the Z1, Z7, FX1, and EX1), we do not recommend the microX for these cameras at this time. The Sony V1, Sony A1, and other Sony HDV cameras with a filter size less than 72mm are exceptions and do work with the microX. A version of the microX designed for Sony cameras including the EX1 is in production and is planned for release shortly after the microX.

I just bought an EX1 and i have the HD acromat and still have a hard time getting good edge to edge.

Hi Jacob

There is a fairly well known clip of redrock/ex1 here:

You will need a different achromat regardless, as the SD won't cut it for the EX1.

You may try dennis' tip with your M2, since his suggestions for the brevis ("zoom/ crop slightly in post to clear up the edges") would work for any adapter.

We just finished a series of tests with our in-house EX1 and I'm happy to announce full frame, tack sharp edge to edge is just around the corner for Brevis users in both SLR and academy formats. We're just tuning a bit and will have the kit for general release in a few weeks. Teaser footage coming in 2 days :-)

I think the M2 link that brian posted looks more like super16. This is probably because of the need to zoom in past academy to get rid or vignetting (pure speculation). I am working on three projects with the EX1 and the SGpro that will be finished before June. I will see if I can get permission to post some stills. The footage looks fantastic and once Wayne finalizes the EX1 achromat it will be unbelievable.

Hey Dennis that's great about the EX1 kit for use with the Brevis. By the way, what's the status of the new updated Cinevate mattebox and the follow focus system you guys said were going to be released?
