Does anyone know when the expected redrock mattebox will be available?

Is there an other lowbuget mattebox out there for mij HVX-M2nikon setup?

Oh I like this!!!!! REDROCK better take notice and step it on up! I was holding out for thiers.... I'll keep an eye on this, looks pretty cool.

Tell you what, when we publish our pictures of the microMatteBox, let's revisit this discussion :)

It looks like the geardear matte box has a lot of potential for light leakage from above. Could just be the angle of the photo... but...

Geardear looks good and Redrockmicro are making excellent gear but, the price might be a big factor on which to buy..

Hello all,
I just wanted to say, that it´s possible now to attach the geardear mattebox directly to the DVX 100 and the HVX200, there´s a new clip-on lensmount. Have a look on www.geardear.com , first page there are pictures. Tell me how you like it...
Thanks
Gerhard

Gerhard,

A few questions I'm sure we all have:

- How much does the mattebox weigh? Seems pretty bulky to work as a Clip-on.

- What's going on on top of the mattebox, where the filter holders slide in? It's unclear from the pics...but it does look like there are gaps where light can clearly infiltrate and bounce around

- Are the flaps adjustable? Are they on hinges? Can you post pics of that as well?

Thanks - Gil

Hi gilzoo,
thank you for your reply.

The weight of the mattebox depends on how much stages you use, I´ve measured the weight from several options. It starts from

4x4 one stage clip-on with 2“ hood and filtertrays 380 g

4x4 two stages clip on with 4“ hood and filtertrays 450 g

4x5.65 one stage clip-on with 4“ hood and trays 410 g

4x5.65 three stages clip-on with 4“ hood and trays 540 g.
one mask is 50 g
one filtertray 15 g
one filterstage 50-60 g
This isn´t much, the material is very lightweight, it´s 30% air, only top and bottom of the slices are solid. Everybody is suprised, when they get one in their hands. The screws are the heaviest parts, and of course the glas filters...

The Filters weight:

one Tiffen glas 4x4“ 110 g
one Tiffen glas 4x5.65“ 145 g

Do you think, the thing is looking bulky? Maybe because it´s a 4x5.65" version. you can have a 4x4" version, which is a little smaller, but I think, in wideangle sometimes it´s better to have the option, even in 16:9. Both sizes 4x4" and 4x5.65" fit in the 4x5.65" version.

On the pictures you see the mattebox with the early "hoodbase", which has never been delivered. I´m sorry, that this causes misunderstandings. I have set up a additional page http://www.geardear.com/pictures6.html which shows the top of the filtertrays and the new "hoodbase". Everythings closed now, all filtertrays have to be put in. And if you rotate the 4x5.65", you have to be careful, there is a maximum. You shouldn´t put the 4x5.65" to 90°, it sticks out a bit ;-) But you can then switch to a filter with 4x4", this will not stick out.

The flaps are adjustable only by changing them from 4" to 2" now. Maybe we produce a longer one (6" to 7" wide), if there is demand. But if you have longer lenses, you put in the masks, with is much more reliable than the one flap from above. In the 35mm or 16mm real film world I use the mattebox always with masks.
But I decided not to make hinges on the flags, because it´s difficult to produce and to fix it in a durable quality, so it would be much more expensive. But if you think, this is a neccessity, I have a second thought...
The concept of the mattebox is to provide maximum strenght and flexibility with acceptable production costs. The one advantage of the concept is, that you can take off and add everything easily . Let me give you an example:
You shoot a close-up of a package, and your mattebox is in the way of the light from the left side. But because of filtering and your brilliant backlight you need a mattebox. But your product has a shadow from your flags. Then you take off the sideflag on the left side, and - voilà - your shadow is gone... try this one with a regular mattebox from ARRI or Chrosziel with a fixed hood. I know what I´m talking about, I´m in the advertising filmbusiness as a D.P. since 1990, you can have a look on www.kamerahirsch.de, that´s my work. I guarantee you, the mattebox works, and it works like you wanted matteboxes to work since the beginning. After a short while you will be asking you, how have you been able to work with these former unflexible pieces...
And we are producing these matteboxes on demand, so if you have extra wishes, it´s not a big deal to make very special pieces, whatever you want. You tell us and it is produced. Try this at the other manufacturers in Munich. And the best is, for these possibilities it is a very low price...
Hope to hear from you, hopefully it was not too much of information. I tend to write to much, because I´m on my own so fascinated of this idea. Crazy...
But thank you, if you have made it through this post...
Best wishes from Germany
Gerhard

Wasn't that supposed to be revealed during cinegear?
