M. Night Shyamalan to Direct Harry Potter?

M. Night Shyamalan, director, writer, and producer of the sixth sence. unbreakable, signs, the village, and lady in the water was offered to direct the 1st harry potter movie but he turned it down. He has been offered again to do the next ones after order of the pheonix. He has not confirmed anything yet, but In my opinion I think he would be great for it.

actually, he's considering it now that his new home is warner bros. here's what he had to say during the Lady in the Water press junket...

"You know, that Harry Potter dance has gone on a long time. The problem is that it is a living breathing thing now, all by itself. When it comes over to my camp, it needs to be kind of handed over, adoption papers and everything. That's a tricky move."

"I haven't met with J.K. [Rowling]. The first one was offered to me, but that conflicted with 'Unbreakable,' which was unfortunate. I would definitely, but I think probably before that I would adapt a book. I've gotten close a few times to adapting books."

and in an interview with 'the leaky cauldron'...

"I would be the greatest protector of an author's stuff. Especially things that I respect, that I know there's inherently magic in it. I would be very wary of screwing it up, so I would be very careful... There's no way that it would be missed by lack of effort or lack of care or lack of attention. I would be giving it every single iota...I would cherish it."

I guess if he could adapt it himself and write the screenplay, then yeah, I could see him doing that.

Could be interesting.

some more... he did an interview with Pottercast... these are the highlights....

"Clearly, I would love to close the series," he says, while commenting that, "there's a great need for magic right now. That's probably why I went to it. We're all a little lost and this idea of magic is important to us."

"Screenplays are fun for me. Very, very fun. [I would want to see] a serious emotional conflict...where you really are torn, because power has such a double-edged sword to it...I want the audience to feel that for a moment. To go, you're full of all this power, but what are you going to do?"

COOL!!!

Maybe he'll even cast himself in the movie! Why the hell shouldn't he? He is one of the greatest actors of ALL TIME! Duh! Just like Tarantino and his show stopping performances. Screw Hitchcock! He didn't even act in his movies. He just hid in the poo pooing background! What an arrogant prick. I think Night would make an excellent Dumbeldore, ya know, cuz Dumbeldore is the MAN, just like Night. I mean, he's like the Micheal Jordan of Directing. They were all wrong when they called this guy the next Spielberg! It's actually an insult to Night, cuz Spielberg sux and Night is sooooooo much better. I hope he writes it too! To hell with the book! I just love his twist end- oh, I mean, as he puts it, "Paradigm shifts". They're so kewl! It's like how a magician pulls rabbits oput of their hat, but instead it not a magician, it's Night. And it's not a rabbit, it's a paradigm shift. And it's not a hat, but rather his a$$. Ya know, like those mind bendingly underrated films Fight Club and The Usual Suspects, which are like, this generations Citizen Kane! I can barely contain my enthusiasm!

Here's to the movies and the ego maniacs that direct them:

Knight definately comes across as in love with himself. But he can make a movie. he understands that magical langauge.

It is this langauge that seperates the big dogs from the little dogs.

Filmmakers that can speak in mis-en-scene

Spileberg
Tarantino
M Night
Fincher
Scorsese
Cameron
Anderson (Both of them)
Mendez
Gibson
Malick
Jackson
Mann
McTiernan
Stone
R Scott

The directors that do not :

Singer
Carpenter
Romero
Rodriguez
Smith
Roth
Woo
Lynch
Harlin
Bay
T Scott

i thought you like carpenter?

I like Tony scott even though someof the movies suck his visuals are nice.
Lynch, really john? just not your bag?

I love Carpenter but let's face it; he never really matured as a filmmaker.

I find Christine to be his most proficient film in terms of cinema langauge; and love his first half resume dearly

Gotta' agree with trooper on that one... that's a good little read there... fun post.

I SO want to like MKS movies... but I'm so heartbroken at the logic problems in everything after the sixth sense. I sit there in the theater really enjoying myself and then suddenly I want to shout "NO NO NO... you stupid f***! What were you thinking?!" Then I just recoil into my bucket of popcorn and simmer until the show is over.

I'm excited about his movies every time and then I feel duped afterwards. Yes the current movie looks good... the previews make me want to see it... this time I'm going to kick that football over the trees... I'm really going to kick it this time... AaaaaAAAAaaaaAAArrrrrRRRggggh.

That's my unfortunate prediction... and yes, he does come across as being in love with himself.

I may end up seeing this movie at the theater anyway... just out of "life-boredom" but the most important twist of the night will be the lime in my drink on the way in.

EDIT: Let me take this a step further... X-Men 3 or 4 or whatever it was... yes it was stupid, yes it was filled with logic problems, yes I enjoyed it to the ridicule of others... so why is it that M.Knight gets a free pass on even more rediculous logic problems? Considering how pretentious the releases are... as if there's genius at work that some people aren't smart enough to see... all I'm saying is that an alien life form smart enough to come from the ends of the universe and cloak their ships with sophisticated technology would probably be able to turn a doorknob.

EDIT EDIT: Let me say that I think MKS is a good, if not great director... I think he's a mediocre writer and a worse actor... but what frustrates me is that I think he could easily be a good writer if not for the logic problems. I've found the latest Harry Potter flicks to be quite generic... I think MKS could make that franchise interesting for me as long as he isn't involved in the writing.

John, realy great list, I'm surprised by how much I agree with you.

Still...Peter Jackson has never impressed me much at all (blasphemy, I know...) and I think Lynch and Bay, while not always great in a conventional sense, have unique abilities that no one else can match. Also, where's Raimi? I think he's right up there with Spielberg and Cameron.

By the way, you should check out the trailer for my new project since you're the only one on the forums that actually watched my last one. This one's different.

actually from what i've heard and read from his next movie lady in the water there is no twist at the end.

And for effect, read this:

You may lose all respect for this dick.
i spent a month on the set of Lady in the Water, shooting b-roll whle my partner interviewed the cast and crew (which included three sitdowns with night). and the 'night' described in this blog doesn't match up with my experience. i found him to be a charming guy that ran one of the most fun and stress-free sets i've ever been on.

so i'm leaning toward the idea that this reporter is not good at his job. i mean, he asked if he could get a tuna fish sandwich and criticized the way the guy ran the interview... that makes him an ego maniac asshole?

The two trailers for Lady in the Water turn me off, especially the most recent one I've seen. I won't be seeing this until it comes out on DVD or the dollar theatre.

nah. even if you dismiss the above, ( and come on, he comes off like a prick) he is without a doubt an ego maniac. Not knowing him personally, I can't vouch for the whole asshole thing, only knowing what I've heard from people who have worked on the set with him (grips, tech dudes, interviewers). But, I have seen all of his films and I know this man has one of the biggest heads in the industry.

It's always nice to hear from someone we know who has first hand experience. Anyone can put up a blog. Thanks for the insight, cygnet74.
