M KNIGHT's The Happening

I was once in a writing class, and someone mentioned Stephen King to the instructor. The instructor (who had published one small novel of vague interest)guffawed at the mention of the name. He said King wasn't a good writer. I never went back to that class.

Alias was one of the best shows on TV at the time. I miss it. And the Red Band trailer for the Happening looks damn good. I like all of night's films, But I only Love the 6th sense and Unbreakable. Signs was good and the Village was alright. If I see some one get on the ground in front of a moving mower and let it ride over them, I'm there.

Add to that, M. Night Shyamalan comes across as a jerk. However, he is a great storyteller. I love how he ropes you into every story. It doesn’t matter if the finality is unsatisfying, the truth is, he is very adept at roping you in. Why the hate? It’s all about getting fans, eyes, people to watch, and audience members…A lot of people hate or resent SIGNS, THE VILLAGE and THE LADY IN THE WATER.

Thing is, he is a very skilled teller of stories.

actually, Night is one of the friendliest directors i know.

Quite a few years ago, before I went to CSUN (give a shout out to my alma mater and TC) I applied to UCLA’s film program. When I went there in person to meet with some of the staff I was young and eager and remember jokingly saying “I want to be the next Spielberg”. Nevermind the fact that I am much more of an actor before I will ever be a filmmaker, writer or director. Point is, the 3 faculty members there resoundingly said, “oh God. We are going to try to teach you to be a different kind of filmmaker than that!” I never understood that.

I never understood any animosity towards Spielberg. He may not be the artistic choice like Kubrick, Hitchcock, Michel Gondry, Mike Figgis, etc…He may not be arty but give me a mother freaking break. He is still one of the best if not THE best filmmaker/storyteller ever to grace the silver screen. The man has been and always will be a genius. I can’t help but dismiss Spielberg haters as jealous hacks.

The man has brought us some of the greatest movie experiences of our time or in the history of film…Jaws, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, E.T., The Color Purple, Always, Saving Private Ryan, Munich, etc. etc. etc. To insult Steven Spielberg is to insult yourself. He is clearly an incredible auteur.

That's something I have always wanted to say, when people confront me about Spielberg's films.

I think Spielberg is a USC alumnus. You might've rustled some cross-town rivalry feathers. Well, they decided to take him after he was famous. His school of record is CSULB, but the USC versus UCLA rivalry persists.

Interesting list, although I have more respect for those who never went to film school and made it on their own merits, rather than actors who only got a shot because of their clout.

I will be seeing this at midnight and posting a review right afterwards. From what I'm hearing, it's more M. Night being M. Night. Take that for what it's worth.

The more shi*e I see coming thsi Summer, the more hyped I am on this.

(*** warning: no spoilers, but I am drunk posting ***)

I'm usually a sucker for this type of story, and for Shyamalan's storytelling... but... whoah, I just saw it.... um, well, it'll be fun watching the Epic Movie II version of the Happening.

And, judging from the audience's reaction, I would've found it uncomfortable being M. Night during the movie's test screening.
