I am a big fan of Shamlyan's work. Unbreakable is to this day among my top 20 films, Sixth Sense might have been, had someone not told me the ending weeks before I saw it. The village I enjoyed, but was not blown away by it,
I was put off by Signs and Lady in the water totally disappointed me. The thing that annoyed me about both films, was the suspention of disbelief (or lack there of). In both Sixth and Unbreakable, the largest hurdle was doubt. We (the audience) were constantly reminded of the shear improbabilty of the story, but were delivered plot in small enough logical/emotional bites to break though our disbelief along with many of the characters in the film. LITW had charaters that just accepted things that would have had me offering the guy lithium or thorazine. I mean in the end of the movie, he had an entire room accepting a story about a mermaid and some evil grass monkies.
The story also replaced a lot of actual action with (overly) metaphorical BS.
It must be hard to keep writing stories that drag on with the whole overcoming disbelief, but maybe it's time to pick a different genre.
