Lumix FZ1000

Any info on the 50fps image burst?

In full sensor resolution? Didn't hear of it. There is the option to generate stills in camera from 4k footage - but that's only up to 30fps.

Some first footage:

Looks good imo. But will there be a sensor crop for 4k recording? Or will there be a full sensor read out? If so, HOW will it be done? In theory this could provide a sensor size close to the GH4 which substantially crops the M43 sensor - on the other side, if there's a crop, the original 16:9 sensor size of 5.472 x 3.080 pixel would shrink to 3.840 x 2.160 - a much, much smaller size than the 4K area on the GH4.

Edit: After some research I have to answer my own question negatively. This is what imaging-resource writes:

"At its maximum 4K resolution, the FZ1000 records using pixels from an eight-megapixel area at the center of the sensor, increasing the focal length crop by 1.48x, for a rather tight 35mm-equivalent focal range of 37-592mm -- good news if you shoot at telephoto, but not if you're a fan of wide-angle video. At Full HD resolution, however, the FZ1000 uses the full sensor width and then bins pixels on-sensor, potentially achieving a similar result to that of the RX10."

One point, important for me in this class of camera, is the image stabilization. It's a hybrid system, so in its active mode there will be a crop, same like Sony's RX100 MKIII. But how will that play out in 4K recording?

I believe the 50fps images are 5mp. If you extract 4k stills from 30p video you'll be looking at a slow shutter speed...i.e 1/60th, or staccato video if you choose a higher ss. If I was a stills person, and wanted to extract 4k stills from the 30p video, I'd shoot in shutter priority with a higher ss, and sacrifice the video quality. If I was a video shooter, and might occasionally want a frame grab, I'd stick to 1/60th and hope there wasn't too much motion.

the 4k mode turns the lens into 37-592mm

So there's a really heavy sensor crop when shooting 4k... The only solution I see to get a somehow cinematic DOF and FOV is an anamorphic adapter, the one from SLR Magic should fit perfectly thanks to the 62mm thread of the lens and its lightweight design.

A somewhat weird solution for a camera designed for compactness but sooner or later someone will give that combo a try. Looking forward to see that footage online...

timelapse ....4k, or just 1080 ?

...and Dave over at image-resource also answered this question for me.....in the affirmative.

4k timelapse and I assume stopmotion as well. That's pretty cool to say the least !

Maybe pany will make a .6 WA adapter ?

That would be nice. Though a WA adapter only improves the FOV while an anamorphic adapter gives you better DOF - in this case the camera would become something like super16 again (as it is in 1080p). Not exactly, but close to it.

but an anamorphic would be almost impossible to make for the zoom range of this lens, while the .6 would only be used when you just needed wider.
