Lug nuts as sandbag fill

I have a friend that scraps cars and has offered me buckets of lug nuts. Any down side to using as fill?

I'd do it. Try to get small bags as it will weigh a lot. I use shot bags for my smaller lights and its the same idea.

Rust and it may not conform to some objects. Otherwise free is free if you already have decent bags to put them into.

They'd only be good for weigthing stuff down. Sand bags have other uses on set (floor prop for the camera, to even out a dolly track, or something to rest your knees on with a hard surface) that the bulky lug nut filled sand bag won't work for.

I use the cheap pea gravel from like Home Depot and I can't imagine it being any LESS sharp/jagged than lug nuts - and I've been doing that for years with no problem in any of my sandbags. I'd say give it a shot!

Risk? That's a bonus

Kidding aside, if you can afford the "real thing" get the real thing. Personally, I consider any "DIY" unprofessional. If I am hiring someone I want them to have the very best kit. Not some homemade nonsense. The lug-nut "hack" shouts to others that you are a hack. Image matters. Even on the small things.

A guy I used to shoot for always used to say "Dog and pony show" when you were going out on shoots for important/big clients. Meaning perception is VERY important, especially when dealing with clients that are spending a lot of money and have certain expectations for what they're spending this money on. The on-screen product looking impressive isn't the only thing that is expected to be that way. One of my friends said SOP on big corporate shoots used to be to pull every light and C-stand off the grip truck and set them up, even if you were just using one, so that the client would see lots of big equipment that was there for their shoot so they felt even better about the money they were spending.
