Lucasfilm combines video games with movies.

Who wants to customize movies in real time? You can customize a novel in real time now, by using word processing software, or simply a pen. You can re-edit movies now on consumer software, but who actually does that?

They're missing the whole point of story telling.

Ahhhh, are you guys missing the point? This is live motion capture without having to render. Thats some pretty impressive stuff right there.

I think the first thought is a gimmick: "Put your friends in the roles of Stu, Phil, Doug, and Alan from The Hangover!" It sounds more like an iPhone app than a technological innovation that could change the industry.

But the fact is, this could change the industry. We've talked about virtual reality and a hypothetical future where video games were movies and movies were video games for years now, and with this live-render motion capture technology, that future - as scary and exciting as it is - could be a reality in the next ten years.

It's really just a matter of someone with real vision utilizing this technology to create some game-movie hybrid that would benefit both the viewer/player and the storyteller. Perhaps the biggest (and most frightening) change will be a shift that takes us from strictly "storytelling" to more of "designing" stories.

At the end of the day, I don't even know what all the possibilities of this are, but I'm excited to find out.

I agree. I don't think this will work for making "interactive movies". Basically anyone making a movie wants to customize it in real time rather than in post.

Before it was, have your actor go through his or her actions, shoot that, do your 3d models, add motion cap, then sync those two elements together in post, hope it looks like what you want.

With this once you have all your 3d assets, like characters and set with props, you could just shoot your series or movie in real time. It makes shooting with 3d assets just like shooting on a real set. You can do a walk through, nail down the action, and shoot (record whatever). No rendering to see if it looks right. I"m sure you can do a master, go in for close ups, again just like on a real set. It looks pretty awesome.
