So I can’t be the only one with this issue here. I’ve been shooting freelance for a long time as well as editing, and other media work. Like everyone else I’m moving over to shooting HD mostly on a GH2 which requires transcoding everything to pro res and I got really used to always having mini-dv tapes to look back at if a drive failed or I needed to dump for space.
It’s been about 6 months and I’m crazy busy in a good way but I’m overwhelmed by the storage. Now I’m saddled by drives filling up constantly. I shoot mostly documentary, too, so I tend to have lots of footage. I’m overloaded and I can’t just put media on HD’s anymore, I’ve got to set up an archive system. I never hear a peep from anyone about storage space, though, and I can’t be the only one that’s had numerous drives fail on me.
What do other video people do long term? I’m thinking LTO tapes and drives, but I don’t know anyone else who can tell me about it; I use Macs and the drives I see online don’t seem all that compatible.
Some people have said use online storage, but I don’t think it’s designed for archiving and it’s crazy expensive. I’m willing to shell out for something reliable but I need more advice about how LTO tapes work. They seem to record 160gb per tape in the mid-range format. Please share any dat tape experiences, my pile of crappy drives is ready to explode. thanks
