Yeah, that is what got me, that price is for a DOZEN of them!. That comes out to under $11.00 a piece. I guess I just gotta drop the hammer on those.

Maybe it was a bait and switch. If it looks too good to be true blah blah. Besides, depending what you want to power, would you really want to run the risk of using cheap a** cables and burning down your location or melting your gear?

I contacted the company and what they deal in mostly is inventory reductions and overstocks. I bought a couple of these stingers, for $19.99/piece (free shipping) to check them out, and they are of excellent quality. I went ahead and ended up buying 10 of them. I still think I came out ahead. A lot of folks don't realize that when they put together a low budget light kit that there are other expenses, stingers being among them, that you will have. They are 12 gauge, 3 wire stingers rated at 15 amps, for a max load of 1875 watts. They appear to have more available.

Sorry bringing back an old post. Now that I have collected a few lights, I need to have good extension cords. Right now they are just Lowel Omnis & totas, china balls and clamp lights. But I figure down the road I may upgrade so I might as well get top notch stingers now. Regular extension cords look different than the stingers on filmtools. Looks like they have different plugs and better insulation around the cord.

Would I be making a mistake in getting 10 or 12 gauge extension cords at home depot? Better just to get the film tool ones? Or will these be just as good? http://www.milspec-direct.com/Category.aspx?CategoryId=16

Thanks.

That is the outfit that I bought the stingers I got off of eBay from. I like Film Tools, but their prices are definitely premium prices. I got ten of the 25 foot 12 gauge 3 wire stingers like the ones that you listed and I really like them. I would suggest getting the best quality stingers you can for the best price, in the color black of course (They are easier to hide in a scene than bright colored cords).

Thanks. Should I go for 10 gauge? I think I will always be using house power and not a generator, so will 12 gauge be ok?

Any thoughts on the ones that glow to indicate power, etc? Does that stay on permanently? I wonder if it gets into shots.

Thanks for the help!

I think that for a light kit like you have, even with some cool upgrade lights, those 12/3 stingers from Milspec will work out great. I don't think that I would get the ones with the lighted ends. I don't see a need for them and would want to have to deal with the lighted plugs if I had to run some stingers across the back ground in a night exterior shot, or what ever. I have, and am building on, a light kit designed for guerrilla fictional narrative filmmaking and those 25' 12/3 stingers work great. They are good quality and I am glad that I got them. I figure that with 10 25 footers I can light off of house power in most locations that I will probably be going into. If I get into having to run power beyond that, I am going to call some pros in and set up a proper power supply, with a tie in directly to the electrical service.

No, 12 gauge is what you want, good for 15A it's heavy enough for anything less than 2K fixtures. The ones that glow are not necessary but can be handy for 50' or 100' runs IMO, but not needed in 25' lengths. Obviously, you might occasionally have to hide the little neon lamp in the long ones, of course. You should always have a little circuit tester on your belt anyway so you can check an outlet or stinger when you need to check whether it's hot. Like this: http://tinyurl.com/7kzaupc
