Lowering the light level.

I have very limited lighting experience and need some advice. When I shot my last film, I borrowed a very inexpensive light and when I turned it on, it made the whole scene too bright; when I needed to make a dark scene. How would I deal with this? Do I need to close the iris on the camera, change the light from flood to key, or get a dimmer?

Scrims and flags will help you control your light. Also, depending on the light, you may be able to purchase a dimmer.
