Lowell Lighting Combo

I picked up a pair of Lowells w/barn doors, filters, umbrellas to do some interview work; also got a VidLed Cool...I needed something that could travel well but still need to add to this kit. I've been reviewing the boards but now am somewhat confused as to what I should be looking at as far as lighting for interviews (1-2 people). I know I could use a softbox since the Lowell's probably won't be enough. If I get a soft box, I can use one of the Lowell's for backlight or something...Not sure what light source to use for the box itself. Just need some help with equipment selection on lights. Thanks.

If you want something that will travel well, go for a lowell rifa light. Or go with a 2 or 4 light flo bank from coollights. You could use one of your other lowells with an umbrella for fill and another for backlight or even use the vidled for backlight and the other lowell for the background. BH sells a 1k Chimera kit too that would be a good key as well.

Thanks. I'll check the market for a used Rifa. I'm not too sure on the coollights for travel; especially when airlines like to throw things into cargo. I have a padded ACE ATA case but even this may not be sufficient for travel abuse.

Yeah I hear you on the airline thing - I used to be a luggage handler and if its any peace of mind we were gentle on pelican cases and any hard sided expensive looking things. At our station we always loaded them last and slid them in carefully and then hand carried them (on a push cart) up to baggage service. We also didnt have a very trustworthy belt system... liked to eat things. The rifa folds up like an umbrella in its own little sleeve and would survive quite well. I'd still pull the bulb though and pack all of the bulbs in their own hard case or something though.

I was just going to post a question about traveling with those Coollights. Everything about them seems ideal except I just don't know about traveling with them on planes. I'm looking at a Lowel DV 55 kit with hard case, and I know they may not be as sturdy as Arri, etc. but I know I can manage to physically get around with the Lowel. And, the Coollights cases don't look like they'll be good for airline travel. Am I on target or should be looking at it another way?

thanks

I've got one in a pelican case with padded dividers and can tell you how it does on a plane in a few months :) Its a portable 2x55 in a pelican 1650. That, a spare bulb case with 4 bulbs, my monitor case, and some misc grip stuff, chargers and power cables, fit perfectly. Around town in the car it does great. The key is to get everything tight in there so nothing can move around but so that it all still has a layer of padding on it as well. From using it and looking at it I'm more worried about them losing it than beating it up.

After much debate, and no news from VidLed on a comparable Rifa-like product, I may have to go for the Lowel Rifa 55. I've got my Pelican 1660 brute to pack it in. Know anyone who might want to part with a 55?
