Lowel Rifa Soft Lights

Re: Lowel Rifa Soft Lights

I like 'em - great quality of light, the setup is a breeze (just let em cool a little bit before you get in there to pack up) if you just want one great light in a room, a rifa is great. Umbrella's might be cheaper and faster, but they light the entire room and are hard to control without lots of flags. Softboxes are great, but slow setup and bulky bits and pieces. Only thing I don't like is the price. It's not that they are not worth it, it's just...oh hell, I'm a cheap bastard who was planning on ordering another one shortly. Walter's graff-light fluro is a great alternative I am looking at. http://www.bluesky-web.com/

While I'm rambling, the big one was great when the camera was a BVW 400A betacam (read large and light hungry) but for a DVX user, I think getting in closer with a smaller fixture would be better for an interview setting. If it's a larger area you want to light, maybe a tota light bounced or through a frame (spun, frost whatever) would be a cheaper and more versatile option. Not as sexy, but cheaper and more versatile.

Everything Lowel makes is decent - it really matters what your application is.

Re: Lowel Rifa Soft Lights

I have both the 55 and the 44. They are awesome! I have used chimera's with a speed-ring around a Tota and prefer the fast set-up time of a Rifa. They literally open like an umbrella then you attach the diffusion material to the front via four corner pins. We actually used Rifa's on quite a few of the stills you see on this page http://dvcreators.net/products/dv_enlightenment.html

One thing you might also want to look at is the 40 degree egg crate for the Rifa's. It cuts the light a bit, but makes it much more directional. Works great if you're in a totally dark room and want a solid black background with only the nicely subject lit.
